Qnity is seeking a Senior Automated Process Equipment Mechanical Design Engineer for the Kalrez business.  The selected candidate will lead design development for automated process equipment for the regional manufacturing sites and collaborate closely with our partner site in China to finalize designs and support fabrication, testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have detailed expertise in designing and commissioning automated equipment for discrete processes.  In addition, this candidate will have a concentration in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation.  Design and development needs will range from improvements to existing manufacturing equipment to the development of new, custom-designed equipment.  Lean Automation techniques will be utilized to ensure layout optimization is achieved through value stream maps (VSMs) and process simulation.  The engineer will be responsible for developing and vetting concepts, proof-of-principle designs, prototypes, and commercial-scale equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop first-of-a-kind custom equipment including conceptualizing new processes and equipment based on business requirement
  • Ability to design components and machines in a modular way that can be utilized in subsequent machines and flexible enough to have the ability to change out components easily.
  • Work with operations, maintenance, safety, and engineering to design improvements to existing equipment
  • Provide expertise in mechanical layout to support projects at the sites.
  • Provide expertise in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at the site to understand the challenges they face and provide an automated solution.  The solution must be engineered in a way that has minimal impact on the area's ability to produce, and is minimally invasive to our external customer change protocol
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and  external suppliers to design, fabricate, and qualify equipment.
  • Provides technical expertise to support the following:
    • Business-level and site-level Technology Roadmaps
    • Automation Assessments
    • Capital projects including Statements of Work (SOW), Design Reviews, Construction, Acceptance Tests, Commissioning, and Safety Reviews
    • Site Automation Evaluations/Improvements
  • Ability to collaborate on multiple projects at the same time as a technical expert.
  • Supports the EHS organization to assist with investigations and action items.
  • Collaborate and support of the Qnity S1M machine safety standard.  Proactively address machine safety risks by participating in machine risk assessments (MRAs) during design and execution.
  • Develop equipment standards to support the equipment from a leveraged engineering perspective and deploy the technology throughout the organization.
  • Provides technical expertise for Management of Change, including technical reviewer of site MOC processes. 

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a discrete manufacturing environment focused on the detailed mechanical design and maintenance of automated equipment preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with coursework concentration involving machine design and process simulation.
  • Able to travel to partner site in China (average 10% of time)
  • High proficiency with CAD/CAM software including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Experience deploying and standardizing a product data management (PDM) system for a robotic integrator or manufacturing site.
  • Preferred: Experience with robotic simulation environments including ABB RobotStudio and KUKA.Sim
  • Preferred: Experience importing models and documentation to Nvidia Omniverse.
  • Experience with Machine Risk Assessments, Performance Level calculations, and Validation Plans
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electrical fabrication technology
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a challenging, diverse team environment in a respectful manner.
