Electrical Designer
Contract-to-Hire | Lexington, KY
Position Overview
The Electrical Designer will support a diverse portfolio of projects by performing multiple phases of electrical design including planning, site evaluations, analytical design, report preparation, specifications, and the development of proposal and construction documentation. This role works as part of a collaborative project team and contributes to the successful delivery of electrical designs across a variety of project types and clients.
Key Responsibilities
Design electrical systems including electrical schematics, grid plan layouts, power distribution systems, lighting systems, protection and control systems, and site and facility electrical designs.
Follow all company, client, and project-specific design and drafting standards.
Plan and develop production drawings, including problem analysis, design layouts, and calculations for non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
Execute electrical design assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including drawing sequence, presentation, component sizing, and refinement of rough sketches.
Incorporate changes to designs and process redlines or markups on active projects.
Analyze reports, drawings, and test data to support electrical design efforts.
Interpret and apply applicable design codes and specifications.
Review design drawings for quality assurance, ensuring compliance with scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
Complete project tasks within budgeted hours and established deadlines.
Compute volume calculations for conduit and grounding layouts, equipment and panel wiring diagrams, and relay panel schematics.
Organize and maintain all project drawing revisions, plot files, and related documentation in a logical and well-structured manner.
Provide clear and concise written and verbal communication for effective coordination with project teams and clients.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience (one of the following required):
Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or related field with a minimum of 7 years of related experience
Associate degree with a minimum of 8 years of related experience
High school diploma with a minimum of 9 years of progressive electrical detailing and design experience
Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program is not permitted for this role
Advanced proficiency with design software including AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel.
Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software applications.
Advanced capability using both 2D and 3D design tools to produce engineering drawings.
Advanced knowledge of electrical design principles, calculations, and design systems.
Strong understanding of the theory and practices of electrical design; working knowledge of related disciplines sufficient to support coordinated project execution.
Ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers in a multi-discipline team environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
