Job Description

Job Summary

Serves as an integral part of the nursing management team. Provides clinical and administrative direction on assigned shift. Ensures that the goals and objectives of the Hospital and the Nursing Department are carried out. Serves as an administrative and clinical resource to the nursing staff and as an administrative resource to other departments in the absence of their department head. Acts on behalf of the hospital administrators in their absence. Informs the Administrator on-call of critical developments and seeks direction when necessary. Functions within limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, Hospital and Nursing Department policies and procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Hospital and Nursing Department.

Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.

Example of Essential Functions:

  1. Provides leadership and direction to all hospital departments in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and objectives. Communicates with administrative and management staff on matters requiring their attention.

  2. Collects information to assess patient care needs and coordinates actions to

provide appropriate staffing. Provides and allocates clinical resources for nursing staff. Provides direct patient care in the clinical areas where competencies have been validated.

  1. Counsels employees and communicates interaction to appropriate Director/Manager.

Recommends and conducts disciplinary action as needed in accordance with personnel

guidelines. Prepares and presents performance evaluations for assigned staff in collaboration with the Manager/Director.

  1. Assumes role of patient advocate respecting guidelines found in the

Frederick Health Statement of Patient Rights and Responsibilities. Promotes

professional delivery of health care. Facilitates cooperative efforts of all hospital departments to improve hospital systems.

  1. Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Maryland.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required. Masters degree preferred.
  • Five years of clinical experience required.
  • Current CPR certification. ACLS preferred/to be achieved within 6 months of hire
  • Appropriate competency validation if provides direct patient care in a clinical area.

Patient Contact

Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in providing appropriate care/contact for patients in the following age groups:

  • X Neonate (0 thru 30 days)
  • X Infant (31 thru 12 months)
  • X Child (13 months thru 12 years)
  • X Adolescent (13 years thru 17 years)
  • X Adult (18 years thru 65 years)
  • X Geriatric (66+ years)

Physical Demands:

Medium Work - Lifting up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 25 pounds while walking. Pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds infrequently or up to 115 pounds occasionally (no more than once per hour).

Ergonomic Risk Factors:

Repetition: Repeating the same motion over and over again places stress on the muscles and tendons. The severity of risk depends on how often the action is repeated, the speed of the movement, the required force and muscles involved.

Forceful Exertion: The amount of physical effort required to perform a task (such as moving patients) or to maintain control of equipment or tools. The amount of force depends on the type of grip, the weight of an object or person, body posture, the type of activity and the duration of the task.

Awkward Posture: Posture is the position your body is in and its effect on the muscle groups that are involved in the physical activity. Awkward postures include repeated or prolonged reaching, twisting, bending, kneeling, squatting, working overhead with your hands or arms, or holding fixed positions.

Contact Stress: Pressing the body hard on sharp edges can result in placing too much pressure on nerves, tendons, and blood vessels. For example, using the palm of your hand to hit or stick objects can increase risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

Working Conditions:

Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Risk: Category A - WILL have exposure to blood or body fluids.

  • Exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials and highly technical and heavy equipment

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to Director of Nursing Resources

Schedule:

This is a PRN position - schedule is based on departmental needs (minimum of 72 hrs per quarter- average (1) 12hr shift per pay period) cover night shift 7p-7:30a needs with rotating holiday and weekend requirements.

Must be available to work part time or full time hours during initial orientation

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. If position is part-time, salary will be pro-rated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid, if applicable.

Pay range: $38.17/hr - $59.29/hr
