What is a R&D Electrical Design Engineer?

A R&D Electrical Design Engineer will perform hands-on design of electronic circuits (mixed, digital and analog) with project responsibility from concept to production.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience (preferably in a manufacturing environment). Soldering, assembly, and repair with THT and SMT components is required. System level troubleshooting and the ability to build models and functional prototypes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Electrical Design and Development:

  • Contribute to design and modifying electronic/electrical controls, systems, modules, and assemblies.
  • Provide design input based on regulatory standards relating to hazardous locations and industry related safety requirements (e.g., UL, CE, EMC/EMI).
  • Lead cost-out / product development projects as assigned.
  • Develop concepts through sketches and physical prototypes.
  • Perform PCB and system level design calculations and analysis.
  • Lead the execution of required validation testing.
  • Contribute to schematic designs/revisions, board layout, and programming.
  • Stay current with emerging technology and present innovative solutions to the organization for consideration.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Develop technical documentation such as test plans, test reports, and calculation summaries.
  • Create technical overview presentations such as Design Reviews and Stage-Gate Presentations.
  • Develop documentation relating to internal assembly, customer installation, troubleshooting, or other assignments.
  • Support product certification and regulatory approval efforts as required.

Project Execution

  • Provide detailed project planning timeline estimates.
  • Lead and execute assigned Engineering deliverables within a Stage-Gate development process.

Cross Functional

  • Collaborate with Operations teams to resolve issues relating to design, assembly, or supply chain requested part substitutions.
  • Interact with supplier representatives as necessary to identify and resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Interact with customers providing technical assistance as necessary.

General

  • Comply with policies, procedures, standards and rules of the Company.
  • Maintain quality assurance policy consistent with ISO standards.
  • Interact and communicate with all levels of employees within the Company, as well as suppliers, customers and peers effectively.
  • Maintain work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner
  • Punctual, regular and consistent attendance.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

Required Experience:

  • 3 years' relevant experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Soldering, assembly, and repair with THT and SMT components required.
  • Ability to build models and functional prototypes.
  • System level troubleshooting.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.
  • Able to read, write, and follow verbal instructions in Standard English.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with industrial process instrumentation.
  • Experience in PCB development software (Altium).
  • Experience with AutoCad and Inventor 3-D modeling software.
  • Failure Mode Analysis experience.
  • Familiarity with DCS, PLC, and current loop control systems.
  • Design with uPs, analog and digital I/O, power supplies and serial comm using SPI, I2C, & USB.
  • Familiarity with intrinsic safe design practices.
  • Familiarity in C++ programming.
  • PCB level troubleshooting.

Physical and Technical Environment:

  • Minimal lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally. • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, bend and stoop in a normal office environment. • Ability to routinely travel throughout multi-floor office and shop area, walking, climbing stairs, utilizing elevator. • Normal vision and manual dexterity. • Must respond to changing requirements and working conditions. • Limited travel required, exposure to varying environments and cultures at the job site, changing deadlines, strict time constraints.
