Job Description: Upper School Science Teacher (Grades 9–12) – Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science

Location: Bluffton, South CarolinaReports to: Head of Upper SchoolPosition Type: Full-time

Position Summary:

The Upper School Science Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, rigorous, and Christ-centered instruction in Physics, Chemistry, and Physical Science to students in grades 9–12. This individual will foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for scientific inquiry while integrating biblical truth into the study of God’s creation. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues, students, and families to promote academic excellence, spiritual growth, and character development consistent with the mission and values of Cross Schools.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction & Curriculum Development:

  • Teach courses in Physics, Chemistry, and Physical Science to Upper School students, ensuring alignment with school curriculum standards and college preparatory expectations.
  • Design and implement engaging, hands-on lessons and laboratory experiences that promote scientific literacy, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
  • Integrate biblical principles into science instruction, helping students see the harmony between faith and scientific discovery (Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1; Colossians 1:16–17).
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials that reflect best practices in science education.
  • Incorporate technology and modern laboratory tools to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.

Student Engagement & Assessment:

  • Create a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, respect, and a love for learning.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress regularly to students and parents.
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and to pursue excellence as stewards of their God-given gifts (Colossians 3:23).

Collaboration & Professional Growth:

  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to support interdisciplinary learning and a cohesive Upper School academic program.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and school events.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with educational best practices and scientific advancements.
  • Support the school’s mission by contributing to a positive, Christ-centered school culture.

Faith Integration & Mentorship:

  • Model a vibrant Christian faith and a biblical worldview in word and deed.
  • Encourage students to explore how science reveals the order, beauty, and wisdom of God’s creation.
  • Mentor students in developing integrity, humility, and perseverance in both academic and personal pursuits.
  • Support students’ spiritual, emotional, and intellectual growth, helping them mature into responsible Christian adults (Proverbs 9:10; Philippians 4:8).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science Education, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid teaching certification or equivalent experience in secondary science instruction.
  • Teaching experience, preferably in an independent or Christian school setting (3 or more years)
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety, experimental design, and scientific methodology.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to integrate faith and learning in a way that is both academically rigorous and spiritually enriching.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Cross Schools and to fostering a Christ-centered learning environment.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning tools.
