Job Description

The Teaching and Learning Librarian is responsible to lead, design, promote, provide, and assess the library’s research assistance and instruction programs. This position requires an enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with students from diverse backgrounds and who can collaborate effectively with other instructors and campus units engaged in student success.

Position Accountabilities

Information Literacy Instruction—Leads in the collaborative planning, design, delivery, and assessment of library instructional services, face-to-face, online or asynchronously, aligned with the ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Teaches a substantial share of the library’s instruction sessions. Creates and maintains online tutorials, videos, and digital learning objects for online and distance students. Facilitates curriculum development for the “Information Literacy and Logic Competency” of the Park Liberal Education program and provide ongoing revision or support for the program.

Library User Assistance—Provides research, circulation, and basic technology assistance to library users and supervises designated staff and student employees in providing similar assistance at the Information Desk (in- person, telephone, email, or online chat/video). Guides policymaking, provides training, and maintains documentation and statistics related to these services and student outcomes.

Instructional Design Support – Serve as the library’s designated instructional design liaison to support faculty and instructional designer use of library resources. Partner with the instructional design team to embed information literacy instruction into new or re-developed courses. Serves point on communication with and support for instructional designers.

Student Success—Supports campus-wide initiatives related to student persistence and success. Serves as an advisor, formally or informally, for students in their educational progress. Builds relationships with students formally or informally to support student success. Coordinates the library’s signature instruction program, How-To Tuesday.

Administrative—Assists with the development of policy guidelines and procedures for library user assistance in conjunction with library and university colleagues. Keeps clear records and assessment data for services provided with support from the Director of Library Services. Aligns programming and instruction to meet the library’s strategic plan or vision. Oversees the curation of the popular reading collection in print and eBook/audiobook via Libby.

Other Duties—Engages in service activities related to university governance and the library profession and in consumption of scholarship. Performs other library duties as assigned. Stays abreast of trends in library management, technology, reference service and information literacy through active participation in local, regional, and national associations, conferences, and relevant listservs.

Position Requirements:

  • Masters of Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited school. This degree must be earned prior to the contract date.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of library theory, as well as current practices and trends in librarianship.

  • Experience providing research assistance to library users, preferred

  • Experience teaching information literacy or research in a higher education setting, preferred.

  • Experience with teaching in a distance, online, or asynchronous environment, preferred

  • Experience using a content or course management system, such as LibGuides CMS and Canvas, preferred.

  • Excellent organizational and oral and written communication skills.

  • A demonstrated ability and desire to fulfill the requirements needed for faculty tenure and promotion

  • Willingness to serve on university-level, regional, state, and national level committees.

  • Flexibility to occasionally work during evenings or weekends.
