The Director of Accounting plays a key leadership role in overseeing the organization's accounting operations. You will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, managing internal controls, directing financial reporting, and coordinating audits and compliance activities. This role leads a team of accounting professionals and works closely with senior leadership to drive strategic financial planning and operational excellence.

What you'll be doing:

  • Oversee and manage accounts payable functions across the organization.
  • Lead general accounting operations and maintain the accuracy of the general ledger.
  • Design, implement, and monitor strong internal controls while identifying and executing process improvements.
  • Review and approve general ledger entries, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and company policies; prepare entries as needed.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting and assist in the development of a formal fixed asset audit program.
  • Coordinate and lead annual external audits and manage relationships with auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead the implementation of a new enterprise-wide accounting system.
  • Collaborate on budget development, financial forecasting, and strategic planning.
  • Foster cross-functional partnerships with other departments to support organizational goals.
  • Develop and lead the accounting team through goal setting, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership to support strategic decision-making.
  • Recommend and implement updates to financial policies and procedures to ensure continued compliance and efficiency.
  • Provide guidance on sales tax compliance in Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts.
  • Prepare and deliver financial reports and ad-hoc analyses as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we are seeking:

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
  • CPA certification strongly preferred.
  • Master's degree in Accounting or MBA is a plus.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility over accounting teams.
  • Proven success managing accounting operations in a complex environment.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, JD Edwards, SAP, or Oracle.
  • Background in manufacturing, preferably in the food processing industry.
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership and career advancement.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting best practices.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail

Salary range is $116-135k
