Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of skilled work installing, operating, trouble-shooting and repairing three and single-phase electrical equipment, instrumentation (analytical and process) and control system components. Performs preventative and predictive maintenance on industrial electrical systems, analytical and process instrumentation. Works under the direct supervision of the Electrical, Instrumentation, & Controls (EI&C) Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs, inspects, tests, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains electrical infrastructure and equipment, including power supplies, motors, motor starters, overload devices, breakers, switches, power monitors and other electrical related hardware.
  • Installs, maintains, monitors, calibrates, and troubleshoots analytical instrumentation. Follows standard operating procedures and best practices. Provides customer support for instrument data end users. Acquires samples, performs benchtop laboratory analyses, and utilizes portable analytical instruments, for data integrity and instrumentation upkeep.
  • Performs installation, preventative and predictive maintenance on various process instrumentation including flow, level, pressure, and temperature as well as associated process networks and configuration hardware.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains instrumentation and control system components as well as other equipment related to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system including controls components associated with motor control centers, PLC hardware, power supplies.
  • Performs administrative duties including modification to record drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, HMI screens, I/O lists, and other technical information to perform job duties. Maintains Operation & Maintenance manuals, associated instrumentation drawings, and instrumentation standards operating procedures (SOPs), including digitally storing records per Record and Retention Policies. Maintains and controls EI&C spare parts inventory by monitoring on-hand availability and determining reorder points.
  • Assists with the support of Engineering efforts, Pilot and Research (PAR) projects, and capital and asset improvement projects. Provides electrical direction and instrumentation technical support and expertise as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist I*

Education, License, Certification, and Work Experience

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent diploma.
  • Minimum of one (1) year in Electrical or Instrumentation Apprenticeship Program or relevant electrical or instrumentation experience or completion of degree program in related technology.
  • Basic knowledge of lab testing techniques such as pipetting, measuring, mixing and instrument calibration.
  • Some knowledge and experience with standard practices, principles, methods, materials, tools, and electronic test equipment used in the electrical, solid-state electronic and pneumatic instrument trades.
  • Some knowledge of the National Electrical Code as well as electrical safety requirements.
  • Ability to learn control systems including, but not limited to PLC, and relay logic and industrial process networks.
  • Ability to learn P&IDs, loop drawings, and control schematics.
  • Good verbal written communication skills. 
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist II

Education, License, Certification, and Work Experience

  • Graduation from high school and minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience as an instrumentation technician or electrical maintenance technician. Completion of a (4) four-year apprenticeship in related field or an Academic degree (or equivalent) in a related technology.
  • Intermediate knowledge of lab testing techniques with (3) years’ experience pipetting, measuring, mixing and calibrating sample analysis instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, principles, methods, materials and tools used in the electrical, solid-state electronic and pneumatic instrument trades.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code as well as electrical safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of control systems including, but not limited to PLC and relay logic and industrial process networks.
  • Knowledge of P&IDs, loop drawings, and control schematics.  
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work assignments, including post-job follow-up documentation and communication. Somewhat independent decision-making abilities under general supervision.
  • Good verbal written communication skills. 
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist III

Education, License, Certification, and Work Experience

  • Graduation from high school and a minimum of six (6) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of industrial process control instrumentation, or similar automation/communication systems, or an equivalent combination of education or experience.  
  • Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship in related field or an Academic degree (or equivalent) in a related technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of lab testing techniques including but not limited to pipetting, measuring, QA/QC procedures, and calibrating sample analysis instrumentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard practices, principles, methods, materials and tools used in the electrical, solid-state electronic and pneumatic instrument trades.
  • Advanced knowledge of the National Electrical Code as well as electrical safety requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of control systems including, but not limited to PLC, and relay logic and industrial process networks.
  • Advanced knowledge of P&IDs, loop drawings, and control schematics.  
  • Ability to delegate, organize, and coordinate work assignments, including post-job follow-up documentation and communication. Independent decision-making abilities and self-sufficient execution of scope work under minimal/general supervision.
  • Training and mentoring of junior staff
  • Good verbal written communication skills. 
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ISA (CCST) level 2 certification
  • Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician license

 *An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

 

SALARY RANGE

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist I - $70,400 - $105,600

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist II - $77,600 - $116,400

Instrumentation & Controls Specialist III - $84,000 - $126,000

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires sitting, walking, carrying, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and squatting. May be required to lift up to 75 pounds. Major activities are performed on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, heights, temperature swings, constant noise, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes, odors, & chemicals. Work is performed in an office, outside, and in an industrial environment. Occasional off hour response is required for this position.
