Job Description

Job Title: Collections Construction Technician
Department: Collection Support
Reports To: Construction Services Manager
Pay Range: $18 - $22/hour

OVERVIEW
Collections focused construction support for exhibitions, historic properties, and exceptional experiences


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following responsibilities describe the general nature of work for employees in this position, but this is not intended as an exclusive or all-inclusive inventory.

• Prepare, build, and demolish gallery and aesthetic walls, floors, and doorframes for exhibitions, including patching, finishing, and painting walls, locating, and moving gallery furnishings, and implementing exhibition designs.
• Construct, erect, install, renovate, maintain, and paint structures made of wood, drywall, steel stud framing, plastics, and other construction materials.
• Support and assist the Construction Services Manager, contractors, and painters.
• Measure, cut, assemble, and finish lumber, trims, and fixtures needed for the museum and historic outbuildings projects.
• Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment.
• Handle miscellaneous construction duties associated with temporary and permanent exhibition projects.
• Work within the Collection Support preparator crew with appreciation of the team and its mission.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Proficient in various carpentry, woodworking, and finish techniques.
• Experienced in use of hand and power tools, machines, equipment, and hardware along with excellent manual dexterity.
• Knowledgeable in construction, drywall, and finishing techniques.
• Knowledgeable in wall repair and interior and exterior wall painting.
• Demonstrated ability to be organized and manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously.
• Experienced with reading blueprints, designs, and layouts.
• Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to other employees.
• Ability to erect, move, operate, and work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and aerial lifts.
• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Capable of solving problems using both clear or partially available information.
• Ability to calculate figures, proportions, and amounts from design layouts. Algebra helpful.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A professional level of knowledge is needed in a specialized field, equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing a two-year college or trade program and two years of job-related experience.
