Job Description

The Hospital Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medications for inpatient ensuring safety, accuracy, and timeliness. The technician plays a key role in inventory management, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and maintaining regulatory compliance in a fast-paced healthcare environment ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and top-quality customer care.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Manages inventory by ordering, receiving, and stocking medications and supplies.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.
  • Answer phones and respond to patient inquiries with professionalism and care.
  • Assist pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medications, including IV admixtures and unit-dose medications.
  • Accurately package and label medications for distribution.
  • Deliver medications to nursing units and maintain automated dispensing machines.
  • Compound sterile and non-sterile preparations under proper guidelines (USP /).
  • Verify medication storage and expiration dates in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Collect, organize, and enter patient medication histories into the electronic health record.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Education/Experience:

Preferred:

  • One year of related pharmacy experience
  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program.
  • Knowledge of automated pharmacy systems.
  • Knowledge of IV Laminar Flow Hood, or willingness to learn.

Required:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Pharmacy Technician registration with Wisconsin DSPS upon hire.
