About the Department

The Sanger Sequencing sub-unit of the Genomics Facility provides Sanger sequencing, fragment analysis via capillary electrophoresis, and plasmid preparation services to University of Chicago researchers. The Facility is well-supported by the Dean's office and fulfills an essential role in the continued academic success of the University of Chicago.

Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

This position is intended as expert technical support of Sanger sequence data collection pipeline. This position carries out plasmid preparation and/or Sanger sequencing or fragment analysis on client-provided colony plates or DNA samples. Additionally, this position will need to be able to perform other Core related services as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Colony picking, bacterial culture, and plasmid preparation.

  • Sanger sequencing bench work.

  • Operates ABI3730xl and related equipment.

  • Work closely with other facility staff to ensure timely delivery of data and samples to PIs.

  • Rigorous record keeping of bench work and lab maintenance.

  • Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab-related duties and tasks.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • Maintains recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Has general awareness in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genetics, or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year prior experience in a Core, Research, or Industry lab setting strongly preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to communicate internally with co-workers and externally with Facility clients.

  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Detail-oriented with strong sense of work ownership.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to perform lab-based tasks for an extended period of time.
