Job Description
- POSITION PURPOSE
The Manager, Capacity Design & Provisioning plays a critical leadership role in ensuring that data center space and power capacity is effectively designed, allocated, and provisioned across the company's portfolio. This role requires a deep understanding of data center infrastructure - including usable white space, power distribution, and customer technologies - to guide the efficient assignment of capacity and to maximize the utility of available infrastructure.
This individual will lead a team responsible for distributing loads across electrical and mechanical infrastructure, resolving provisioning constraints, and collaborating with cross-functional partners to support both new customer deployments and ongoing expansion.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Capacity Design & Infrastructure Utilization
- Lead capacity design strategies to optimize the use of available white space and power infrastructure across data center facilities.
- Evaluate physical and electrical infrastructure to determine available capacity and recommend best-fit placements for new workloads.
- Ensure designs meet technical requirements, compliance standards, and redundancy (N, N+1, 2N) targets.
- Translate customer requirements into actionable infrastructure provisioning plans.
- Be fluent in relevant software tools for provisioning workflows, customer layouts, and infrastructure mapping (e.g., AutoCAD, DCIM platforms, Visio, BIM tools).
Provisioning Operations
- Oversee and approve the assignment of power and space to customer deployments.
- Manage load distribution across UPSs, PDUs, RPPs, and cooling systems to ensure optimal performance and minimize stranded capacity.
- Resolve provisioning obstacles related to space constraints, breaker sizing, cable routing, and power limitations.
- Maintain accurate documentation and asset tracking of available and provisioned capacity.
Leadership & Team Management
- Manage and mentor a team of provisioning engineers or analysts.
- Assign priorities and track provisioning milestones across multiple active deployments.
- Build a culture of problem-solving, accuracy, and proactive collaboration.
- Develop team training plans and standard operating procedures for scalable execution.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with design engineering, operations, and construction to ensure provisioning designs align with facility capabilities and current conditions.
- Collaborate with sales engineering and account management to assess feasibility of new customer deployments.
- Act as a subject matter expert for provisioning best practices, infrastructure limitations, and potential trade-offs.
III. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related technical field preferred.
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in the data center or mission-critical infrastructure industry.
- Strong understanding of data center systems including electrical distribution (MV/LV), cooling, and whitespace planning.
- Demonstrated experience provisioning customer loads and managing infrastructure capacity in an operational environment.
Skills & Abilities
- Deep knowledge of usable vs gross square footage and how it relates to infrastructure and customer technologies.
- Familiarity with data center power distribution components: UPS, PDU, RPP, busways, and breakers.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to solve complex space and power allocation problems under operational constraints.
- Proficiency in tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, DCIM platforms, or related provisioning software is a plus.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS
- Role may require occasional travel to data center sites.
- Must be able to read and interpret one-line diagrams, rack elevations, and technical infrastructure drawings.
