About Our Job

The Denver Fire Department serves the residents, employees, community, and visitors of the City and County of Denver by providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescues, hazardous materials response, and water and high-angle rescue operations.

The Fire Department of the City and County of Denver is seeking a Senior Engineering Associate to support a range of critical functions, including: reviewing fire alarm and fire sprinkler shop drawings, evaluating construction design documents for both new and existing buildings, conducting technical inspections of structures and occupancies, and providing direct customer service by responding to code and process inquiries.

Incumbents are expected to demonstrate the ability to apply engineering principles and a strong understanding of the International Fire and Building Codes, as well as NFPA standards. The role also involves providing guidance and technical expertise to professional engineers, architects, contractors, elected officials, and members of the public.

This role within the organization involves frequent interaction with Fire Department personnel, staff from other city agencies, and members of the design and construction community, and requires a strong customer service orientation.

This position is located at: 201 W. Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80202.

Office hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday-Friday. Following a training period, a flexible start time and some hybrid work will be available.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Performs studies and investigations to identify hazardous or unsafe conditions, prioritizing contracts based on public safety and the efficient allocation of available resources.

  • Reviews complex development and capital improvement construction plans and drawings in detail to ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant laws, codes, design specifications, and standards.

  • Suggests modifications to ensure plans comply with regulations, calculates fees and charges, and issues permits.

  • Contributes to the design and development of system components and uses computer modeling software to prepare construction plans.

  • Assists in evaluating and analyzing various city systems to ensure systems are properly installed and maintained.

  • Recommend systems improvement.

  • Collaborates on work assignments with utilities, city agencies, neighboring municipalities, businesses, community groups, the public, and other stakeholders.

  • Prepares various reports and maintains files and records related to the assigned area(s).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in fire alarm and fire sprinklers as a designer, plan reviewer, or inspector.

  • DFPC certification.

  • Knowledge in NFPA standards, IFC and IBC codes.

  • The ability to read architectural and engineering construction documents.

  • Superior customer service skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Be flexible and solution oriented.

Preferred Certificates in one of the following:

  • Possess a DFPC certification.

  • Registration as an Engineer Intern issued by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers

  • NICET Level III Fire Alarm

  • NICET Level III Automatic Sprinkler Systems

  • ICC Commercial Fire Alarm Plans Examiner

  • ICC Commercial Fire Sprinkler Plans Examiner

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of technical engineering experience.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
