Job Description
Are you a current 2L law student interested in litigation, torts, or corporate law? Kinsale Insurance is offering a paid summer internship designed to give you hands-on experience in insurance claims and exposure to corporate compliance, contract drafting, as well as coverage and tort litigation. This program provides valuable insight into an often-overlooked area of law with strong career potential.

Kinsale Insurance is an excess and surplus (E&S) lines insurer headquartered in Richmond, VA. We specialize in complex and hard-to-place risks, handling claims across property, casualty, and specialty lines. Our Claims department partners with policyholders and legal teams to resolve matters fairly and efficiently while providing opportunities for professionals to develop their expertise.
What You’ll Do
A typical day as a Claims Law School Intern may include:
- Working with Kinsale’s Claims Legal, Compliance, and Product Development team to gain foundational knowledge of insurance industry regulatory standards and insurance contract drafting.
- Collaborating with the various teams across the claims department to gain exposure to a wide variety of claims and types of tort litigation.
- Conducting legal research and providing valuable analysis for the compliance team.
- Gaining exposure to tort claims, including personal injury, medical malpractice, and construction defect.
- Observing claim professionals as they evaluate liability and exposure and work to resolve claims.
- Shadowing claims professionals as they attend mediations, hearings, and other proceedings.
- Gaining insight into insurance litigation, including both coverage and defense matters.
- Reviewing contract drafting with the Product Development team.
- Completing meaningful project work related to claims and litigation.
- Participating in discussions and analysis of a wide variety of litigated claims.
Qualifications
A successful candidate has:
- Pursuing a JD with an interest in compliance, insurance law, or tort litigation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and organizational ability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Initiative and sound judgment when executing assignments.

Hiring Timeline
- Phone screens: October – November 2025
- Interviews: Late November 2025
- Offers extended after interviews
- Internship: 10 weeks beginning May 26, 2026
- Work hours: Onsite in Richmond, VA, Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
