SUMMARY

The Manager of Engineering position is responsible for developing, analyzing, planning, and implementing supply chain solutions that drive better service to our customers, efficiency gains at the DCs, and cost reductions. The manager assumes a leadership role with responsibilities that include: analyzing DC layout, rack profiles, technology options, slotting methodology, and other aspects of the DC to drive continuous improvement throughout the supply chain from the impact the DCs have on the customers (AAP stores) to the internal impact at the DCs, to improvements our vendors/suppliers can help achieve. The work spans multiple distribution centers and requires work cross functionally at AAP. Creates and maintains continuity across all major process paths with peer buildings, maintaining proper and updated standard work documents and SOPs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Direct line management of Industrial Engineers, who will receive dotted line guidance from the DC GMs.
  • Provide direct supervision of resources involved in ideation and delivery of projects and initiatives in support of the business strategy and operating objectives.
  • Direct engineers to ensure projects progress on schedule and within the prescribed budget.
  • Develops a high-performance team that supports the distribution centers competently by hiring strong team members, communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Create and maintain business relationships that result in a clear understanding of supply chain business needs and how industrial engineering solutions can meet them.
  • Responsible for removing productivity barriers, with emphasis on problem resolution, process improvement, business support and the development of collaborative relationships within supply chain and partner departments.
  • Work with all distribution locations and cross functional teams to ensure process changes are successfully implemented. Prepare documentation, including SOP development modification for assigned projects.
  • Works with operations to assess issues, develop recommendations and implement business improvement processes.
  • Creates an improvement process methodology that identifies, captures, and applies improvements to work process development and maintenance methodologies based on lessons learned, industry best practices, and feedback from customers.
  • Utilizes Lean and Six Sigma methodology to drive & sustain continuous improvement.
  • Direct the development and implementation of on-going process improvements in the facilities to move to world class operations within the supply chain.
  • Partner with Store Operations, DC Operations, and AAP Vendors to create a customer focused distribution environment (provides safe, accurate, damage free shipments to our stores that are easy to unload and put away)
  • Proactively monitor SKU velocity and other sales events to properly slot SKUs for customer focused distribution.
  • Evaluate opportunities for SKU consolidations and re-warehousing for efficient storage and customer focused distribution
  • Develops analysis and cost justification on capital project requests when needed.
  • Works with DC and other cross functional departments (including IT partners) to configure a stable, standard and scalable reporting platform for the organization.
  • Helps establish appropriate metrics and reports to guide leadership

SUCCESS METRICS

Success in this role will be measured by the following metrics:

  • Development of continuous improvement methods and strategies that support customer focused distribution
  • Development of clear standards and programs to fix the foundational issues in the supply chain related engineered solutions in the DCs
  • Partner with EHS on SOPs that meet or exceed current safety standards related to fire, life, and safety aspects for the DCs
  • Development and design of MHE such as AutoStore, WES, PIT, PTL, and other technologies that impact the facilities ability to serve the customer (stores) up to and including full DC design
  • Training and education on technical competencies of direct reports including process improvement and DC Design.

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university (Industrial Engineering or technical supply chain experience preferred).
  • 5+ years of related supply chain facilities or engineering experience with at least 5 of those as a manager in a professional or technical setting is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to manage a team remotely.
  • Demonstrated success handling multiple assignments, strong prioritization skills, and a proven ability to manage complex projects on time and budget.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to manage through influence.
  • Good verbal and written skills to communicate with TMs and all levels of management.
  • Strong team builder in working cross functionally. Ability to work in high-expectation situations providing leadership and collaboration to deliver solutions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of customer demands and needs, responding with urgency to critical situations, lead management communications and provide collaborative resolutions to problems.
  • Agile response to business needs, demonstrating appropriate sense of urgency, leadership and creativity to maintain business continuity.
  • Success in projects related to process design, work measurement, productivity improvement, cost reduction, Kaizen 5S, and project implementation required.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving (critical and evaluative thinking) skills to analyze complex data for trends and translate into actionable business recommendations.
  • Highly developed problem solving and prioritization skills that will be demonstrated by the successful and timely completion of assignments.
  • Demonstrated teaching technical competency in process improvement and design work.
  • Ability to drive projects and accept accountability for project progress (on-time, on-budget, quality of work).

LEADERSHIP / SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position directly supervises Industrial Engineers.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and PowerBI.
  • SQL Experience with work measurement methodologies and tools with an emphasis on TIME STUDY expertise required.
  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodology
  • AutoCAD experience and ability to read blueprints.
  • Experience in DC Operations and with HighJump WMS a plus
  • Bilingual Team Members (particularly Spanish-speaking) a plus
