Description
The Lactation Consultant Coordinator (LCC) is responsible for providing comprehensive maternal child and feeding assessment related to lactation for both the in-patient and the out-patient population. This individual provides care to patients via therapeutic use of the nursing process, in collaboration and integration with other health care team members. S/he demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care relevant to the patient(s) under his/her care, applying principles of growth and development over the life span. S/he assesses and interprets patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs. The LCC develops collaborative plans of care for lactation with Maternal Child nursing staff and providers. The LCC is responsible for the development and delivery of breastfeeding education for patients, nursing staff and providers. The LCC is responsible for maintaining the policies, practices and needed reporting for Baby-Friendly Designation. The LCC promotes breastfeeding both internally (within GRMC) and externally (community) with respect to the integration of patient preferences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides lactation assessment, management, education, and instruction, performing collaborative inpatient consultations.
- Offers prenatal assessment, education and support visits to patients seen through GRMC MATCH outpatient services and others as appropriate, providing medical providers and collaborating agencies with summary of prenatal visits.
- Assesses need for post-delivery consultative care and either completes outpatient consultation or refers as appropriate providing medical providers and collaborating agencies with summary of outpatient visits.
- Provides telephone support and triage.
- Serves as a clinical lactation resource to all units in the hospital, providing consultation to lactating women and breastfeeding infants admitted to GRMC.
- Reviews, develops, and delivers infant feeding education for prenatal infant feeding class and for prenatal and postpartum individual education sessions.
- Develops policies and protocols specific to GRMC lactation program, infant feeding and human lactation and provides updates to GRMC caregivers as needed.
- Coordinates and maintains Baby-Friendly designation, overseeing orientation and ongoing education of MATCH staff, education of providers, maintenance of Baby-Friendly practices and completion of required data collection and reporting.
- Delivers care at the patient's bedside at least 50% of the time, while coordinating the delivery of lactation care by others, in a manner that is consistent with current standards of the profession and with policies / procedures of GRMC. Demonstrates technical expertise in areas appropriate to GRMC's patient population. Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve ongoing issues that impact department/organizational Baby-Friendly goals and patient care delivery.
Requirements
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Registered Nurse with a current New Mexico or Multi-State Licensure
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Recognized Lactation Care Provider (LCP) Certification by NMBON: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required
- American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program required in 3 months of hire
- S.T.A.B.L.E. preferred
- Ability to communicate well in writing and maintain accurate up-to-date records and correspondence.
- Proficient in Office software, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Skilled in data collection, interpretation, and presentation
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Three (3) years Maternal-Child Health nursing experience preferred.
- One (1) year experience recognized Lactation Care Provider Certification preferred.
- One (1) year experience with inpatient and outpatient lactation programs and knowledge of infant feeding issues.
