HIRING RANGE: $20 - $28/hour

JOB SUMMARY:
The Lakewood Cultural Center is seeking Art Instructors to teach youth in their various art programs. Our ideal instructor is passionate about art, self-motivated, well-organized, and creative. A candidate who is proficient in various media, including drawing, painting, mixed media, digital art, sewing, and sculpture, etc. This role mainly involves working with children aged 2-15 (ages grouped appropriately) to help them develop their creativity and boost their self-esteem. Shifts will be discussed during the interview process. Occasional evening and weekend workshops and events are required.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business needs. This position would be a part-time non-benefitted position.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position).

Essential Job Functions:

  • Instruct, encourage, support, and lead students and families in classes/workshops that fosters positive self-expression, and builds self-esteem and personal growth;
  • Engage and interact in a positive manner with visitors at community events;
  • Create lesson plans that are exciting and educational;
  • Create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for our students and patrons;
  • Set up the classroom and return the space to the neat state upon completion of class;
  • To be aware and maintain a headcount of where students are at all times;
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of supplies and report for reorder;
  • Report injuries and complete required forms;
  • Immediately notify supervisor of broken equipment or any unsafe conditions;

Hours of Work:

Hours will vary based on the quantity of courses taught and may vary from season to season. This position is continuous.

Important Functions:

  • Works as a part of the team by supporting others and taking initiative;
  • Attend all required staff/planning meetings.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:

  • Receives supervision from the Cultural Programs Coordinator

Essential Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older;
  • Ability to work with children, ranging from 2-15 years old;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents and caregivers;
  • Ability to develop engaging and inclusive curriculum;
  • Experience leading or assisting with art programs/activities;
  • Experience leading or assisting groups of varying sizes;
  • Effectively support students of all skill and ability levels;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students to thrive in groups and on their own;
  • Have good classroom management;
  • Have an understanding of classroom supply safety;
  • Have good communication skills;
  • Have good organizational skills;
  • Background check is required.

Education:

  • A 2 or 4-year degree in Fine Arts, Art, or Art Education;
  • 3-5 years of experience as an instructor or teaching artist may be used in place of a degree.

Experience:

  • One year of experience teaching children or previous summer camp experience is desired.

Required Certifications:

  • A valid CPR/AED certificate or in the process and completed by the start of employment.

Pay Range

$14.81-$57.41

Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable/seasonal positions.
