About this role

Responsible for student advisement and organizing activities. Assists with the operational functions, identification, and selection of program participants. Provides educational, vocational, and personal counseling to low-income, potential first-generation middle and high school students. Provides student guidance, testing, and referrals to help students reach their academic goals. Conducts progressive program outreach efforts and coordinates and presents academic and professional workshops. This position requires working a fluctuating schedule, including nights and weekends. This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advises students on course of study, course offerings, necessary testing, and prerequisites.

  • Guides students and staff and answer questions regarding financial aid programs.

  • Participates in community outreach initiatives. Maintains and updates the mailing list of community organizations, churches, and elected officials. Serves as liaison on special projects.

  • Assists students in selecting a major or program. Assists in understanding educational, personal, and occupational strengths and limitations.

  • Develops and maintains positive relations with the community to promote College partnerships and collaboration. This may include working with various groups to bring diversity into the College.

  • Qualifies, registers, and monitors students in recruitment and retention programs.

  • Assists students with issues utilizing a variety of formats such as in-person, phone, email, and online chat. Assists students with registration paperwork and registration on the system.

  • Analyzes test results and identifies areas requiring further attention.

  • Coordinates or assists with implementing the program’s goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures.

  • Maintains current knowledge of field or profession. Travels to training workshops, conferences, meetings, and professional association events outside college locations as needed.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • One year of related experience

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar application

Skilled in:                

  • Attention to detail while maintaining effective time and task management

  • Fact-finding, analysis, and problem solving

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing on a regular basis with internal and external customers, build relationships, manage customer expectations, and take responsibility for a high level of service

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and interpersonal skills

  • Interact in a positive manner with diverse populations and varying education levels of students, faculty, staff, and the public

  • Organize and prioritize multiple competing priorities to maximize personal and team effectiveness

  • Research information for problem solving

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Regular physical attendance required

  • Valid Florida driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Experience working with at-risk populations

  • Teaching experience

Knowledge of:

  • Student financial aid

Ability to:

  • Bilingual speaking

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Preference is given to applicants who have backgrounds or experience as low-income, first-generation, or disabled students and have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the TRIO Talent Search project’s target population.
