Job Description

Department:                The Christian Science Monitor 

SUMMARY

The Deputy Copy Editor has a high level of journalistic integrity and imbues the job with a deep sense of the Monitor’s approach to news. The individual also has the perspective to watch Monitor journalism at a granular and objective level to ensure that the paper maintains its long track record to editorial excellence, while at the same time keeping abreast of the evolving publishing landscape.

Under the direction of the Chief Copy Desk Editor, the Deputy Copy Editor is responsible for executing Monitor style in the organization’s print and digital products in a way that upholds standards consistent with our healing mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial capabilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • A sharp eye for detail and dextrous fact-checking skills.
  • Ability to assess grammar, punctuation, spelling, tone, and Monitor style, and ensure words are used correctly.
  • Ability to respect individual writing style when executed correctly and well.
  • A readiness to backstop story editors on crucial points such as libel and factual accuracy. An awareness to check all attributions and an alertness to wording that may be doubtful or biased.
  • Commitment to the Monitor's vision for covering the news in a way that promotes deeper engagement and better understanding.
  • A firm understanding of the Monitor’s mission and values, and how this is expressed in Monitor copy. An ability to work with story editors to ensure that copy meets this standard.
  • Strong organizational skills. The ability to assess workflow and prioritize tasks spanning several platforms, queues, and issue dates to ensure that each task is completed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to deal with deadline pressure and multiple deadlines in a short period of time. A good sense of time management.
  • An eye for reviewing graphics, in addition to copyediting stories. Ensures that the text of a graphic is in Monitor style, and that readers will follow the visual presentation.
  • Ability to keep the copydesk’s day-to-day work running smoothly in the Chief Copy Desk Editor’s absence. This can entail organizing daily tasks, communicating assignments to others, speaking for the copydesk in meetings, and serving as the copydesk’s point person.
  • Possession of the confidence to take the lead and guide others when necessary.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format and build and maintain relationships. Is respectful in staff exchanges and works collaboratively in suggesting and making changes to copy.
  • An ease with being both a team player and someone who can work independently. A keen sense of when to ask questions and when to figure out something single-handedly.

Reporting Relationships

Supervisor: Chief Copy Desk Editor

Regular Contacts: Has regular contacts with editors, editorial writers, and other newsroom staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience

A Bachelor’s degree. At least three years’ experience in copy editing, preferably in journalism. An in-depth knowledge of Associated Press style, which the Monitor uses in addition to its own stylebook. Copy editing certification is desirable but not required.

Technology Skills

Ability to quickly learn eZ Publish, a content management system for web publishing, and also the Monitor magazine’s publishing system, which includes Adobe InCopy. Familiarity with Slack and Trello, as well as Google apps, is desirable.

Work Environment

May work remotely. The Deputy Copy Editor’s work shift needs to be during the Eastern time zone’s business hours – as early as 8 a.m.

Engagement with Christian Science

Mother Church membership is preferred, but not required. Understanding of and ability to explain the Monitor’s founding and relationship to the Christian Science Church is essential.
