Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician Team Lead is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician Team Lead coordinates the activities of the Pharmacy Technician's duties within the department including the preparation of medications, maintaining the compounding area and equipment, completing patient callbacks, and monitoring inventory. S/he will work with the Pharmacy Manager to allocate Pharmacy Technician resources appropriately throughout the workday.
Position Specific Responsibilities
- Assists the pharmacists in maintaining federal, state, and local laws, accrediting body standards, and Policies and Procedures (P&Ps).
- Performs IV admixtures sterility testing in accordance with policy, maintains appropriate documentation.
- Assists the pharmacists in the preparation and labeling of medications as allowed by law.
- Prepares sterile parenteral solutions following appropriate aseptic technique and obtaining required checks by pharmacists and appropriate assembly of drugs and supplies by matching codes and quantities from the compounding document, correct labeling of products, checking the final product for the absence of particulate matter and container integrity, and ensuring compounded product gets matched to the right delivery just prior to shipping.
- Serves as designated person for USP 797 sterile compounding standards. Coordinates routine sterile compounding competencies, hand hygiene/cleaning observational competencies, finger tip testing and other competencies for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
- Assists the Pharmacist and Warehouse Coordinator in maintaining appropriate inventory levels. Serves as primary purchaser for specialty pharmaceuticals.
- Performs physical inventories according to policy and procedures.
- Maintains pharmacy records including filing and documenting required information on dispensing records. Maintains hazardous waste record and recall log.
- Coordinates and performs patient follow up calls for refills, routine monitoring and troubleshooting for home infusion patients. Maintains a high level of customer services and refers issues to pharmacists and nurses as appropriate.
- Maintains and tracks DME and other equipment including cleaning and calibration activities.
- Cleans work areas routinely in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Communicates appropriately with all members of the healthcare team.
- Routinely monitors cleanroom logs for completeness and accuracy.
- Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance activities education programs and department/branch meetings. Reports sterile compounding Quality Assurance measures and develops and/or participates in plans of correction as necessary.
- Creates and communicates daily Pharmacy Technician assignments and monitors and adjusts schedule to allocate assignments appropriately throughout the day.
- Coordinates Pharmacy Technician schedules and time off and works with the Pharmacy Manager to ensure adequate pharmacy technician coverage. Creates and maintains Pharmacy Technician on call schedule.
- Serves as Process Owner as assigned. Works on special projects as assigned by management.
- Performs routine duties of Pharmacy Technician and other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Some college or bachelor's degree preferred.
- Three (3) or more years of IV experience strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience managing inventories of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies preferred.
Skills
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Knowledge of USP 797 standards.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- Some states require a Pharmacy Technician certificate or license. Under no circumstances may a Pharmacy Technician mix medications or provide service without a licensed Pharmacist present.
- Current CPR certification required if involved with direct patient care.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In a healthcare setting, exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.
