The Impact You'll Make in this Role
The Health and Environmental Safety Manager is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and overseeing Zoo's team members, guest and environmental safety. The goal is to ensure the Zoo meets all legal expectations and supports occupational health and safety.
As a Health and Safety Manager, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Prepare and enforce policies and programs to establish a culture of health and safety.
- Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines.
- Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law.
- Ensure the zoo complies and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Advise and lead the Safety Committee and zoo leadership on various safety-related topics.
- Prepare and present reports on accidents, near-misses, and safety violations.
- Track, investigate and report all team member, vendor and guest injuries and illnesses.
- Track and monitor illnesses affecting the workplace.
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure timely corrective and preventative actin plans.
- Enforce preventative measures.
- Provide advice, guidance and support with regards to health and safety legislation, issues and compliance together with applicable zoo policies and practices.
- Discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs.
- Effectively communicate guidelines to all levels of zoo team members.
- Contribute to training and development of zoo team members.
- Oversee the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, including staffing, training, compliance, scheduling, and coordination of on-site medical response to ensure timely and effective care for guests and staff.
- Work in collaboration with the Sustainability Coordinator and/or Director of Security to coordinate safety drills required for accreditation.
- Work in collaboration with Guest Experience Vice President and Director of Security and Finance Vice President to monitor and resolve legal issues pertaining to guest and vendor accidents and injuries.
- Constantly exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.
- Be fully committed to the mission of San Antonio Zoo to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wild world we steward and animals we protect.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, related field or equivalent experience.
- Five years proven experience as a safety manager.
- Excellent knowledge of legislation and procedures.
- Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and/or practices.
- Ability to maintain professional composure
- Ability to be personable and approachable.
- Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines.
- Ability to produce relevant reports and policies.
- Familiarity with conducting data analysis and risk assessment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent presentations skills.
- Excellent organizational and motivational skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and dispute resolution skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Must have valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
