Job Description

What We Can Achieve Together:

The Agricultural Science Specialist will join The Nature Conservancy’s Chesapeake Bay Agriculture Program and provide scientific support to our projects that accelerate the adoption of agricultural conservation practices that benefit communities, their economies, and nature. Using your experience in agricultural systems including agronomy, nutrient management, and/or soil health, you will implement field studies, collect agronomic data, and support the evaluation of project’s ecological outcomes. In addition, you will assist in the collection of social science data through participant questionnaires, interviews, and relationship building. 

The Agricultural Science Specialist will work with partners on projects, including local, state, and federal agencies, conservation groups, the agribusiness community, small, diverse producers and large-scale row crop farmers, as well as other public and private organizations engaged in agricultural issues. You will help to coordinate project workflows with both internal and external colleagues across the Chesapeake Bay region, support data input and reporting, manage portions of grants, and help teams to navigate and identify project opportunities and hurdles. You may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. This is a 3-year grant-funded position with a salary between $68,000 - $74,000. Compensation will be based upon skills and experience.

We seek an Agricultural Science Specialist who can complement and build on our team’s existing strengths. For this position, we’re looking for an Agricultural Science Specialist who: 

  • Will apply their passion for and/or experience in agronomy, nutrient management, and/or soil health to projects that that accelerate the adoption of agricultural conservation practices. 

  • Can communicate effectively with diverse groups involved in agriculture including farmers, agribusiness partners, conservation professionals, scientists, and non-conservation staff across diverse organizations.  

  • Can manage their time effectively to meet deadlines and partner requests while also working proactively across multiple projects and teams to identify and address barriers simultaneously. 

  • Can manage and organize large amounts of data, ensure data quality, and create summary reports and graphs.  

  • Can offer creative solutions about new and better ways to accelerate progress toward our conservation goals. 

  • Has experience working as part of an inter- or transdisciplinary team. 

  • Is excited to enthusiastically engage in new and diverse tasks as the need arises. 

  • Sees opportunities to help both nature and farmers thrive. 

What You’ll Bring:

  • Master’s degree in agronomy, soil science, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.   

  • Expertise in row crop agricultural systems, including agronomy, nutrient management, soil health, and/or hydrology. 

  • Experience leading and working with cross-functional teams. 

  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting, and communicating scientific information.  

  • Experience preparing reports of findings. 

  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals or other scholarly achievements. 

  • Excellent communication skills with a wide range of people. 

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.   

  • Experience handling standard business communications. 

  • Attention to detail. 

  • Ability to meet deadlines. 

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $68,000 – $74,000 yearly salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
