Job Description

Safety Specialist

Overview

The Safety Specialist will help maintain high safety standards, promote a culture of safety throughout the organization, and provide guidance to employees on best practices and procedures. This includes safety and health program administration, training, auditing and providing direction for location safety and health compliance.

Essential Functions

  • Schedule and lead new hire safety orientation
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures at local, state, federal level and company policies; manage OSHA reporting and recording requirements
  • Provide monthly safety performance updates to site leadership, covering audits, observations, near misses, and action item status for continuous improvement
  • Lead and/or review all local property damage analysis and provide direction on incident investigation
  • Assist in identification, analysis and control of occupational hazards requiring the application of hazard resolution
  • Complete all safety center administration on safety related incidents
  • Assist in the development of annual refresher training and conduct training
  • Coordinate annual industrial hygiene assessments and training
  • Complete workers' compensation administration based on company expectations
  • Mentor and coach of facility safety partners
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives and systems
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

Work Environment

This job operates 75% of the time in-plant and 25% of the time will be in an office environment. Will require occasional travel. Occasional hours on the off-shift may be required. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers.

Physical Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Driver's License
  • Visual acuity, clear speech & hearing ability, cognitive ability, hand/eye coordination
  • Walking, climbing stairs and occasional ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, driving, and squatting to perform the essential functions of this position; along with sitting for extended periods of time
  • Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment as required
  • Must have good hand/eye coordination and vision to safely fulfill all in-plant job requirements
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and in industrial environment around hot, noisy process equipment with exposure to dust, sand, gravel, diesel exhaust, etc.
  • Pass required background check, physical examination and drug screens

Required Education and Experience

  • Preferred - associate or bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety
  • Three years of demonstrated safety leadership experience or equivalent, plant/manufacturing experience preferred
  • OSHA-10 and 30 certifications preferred
