Job Description

Position Summary: The retail technician team leader will oversee and assist all retail pharmacy technicians to ensure safe and appropriate pharmacy services to patients in the outpatient pharmacy according to regulatory guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. As well as be well equipped to train other technicians to effectively complete the same duties. Other duties may be assigned.

Transcribe new prescriptions to patient profile

Confirm patient demographics are accurate and insurance information is correct

Ensure correct third-party adjudication of medications

Initiate prior authorizations and work with providers on completion

Communicate with nurses and patients about prescription order status and provide updates accordingly

Identify manufacturer copay assistance programs

Communicate with patients regarding prescription delays, or other medication problems

Ensure that cycle counts are completed daily and whenever perpetual inventory discrepancies exist

Notify patient when medication is available for pickup and/or schedule delivery

Maintain basic familiarity with proper medication dosing, use and required monitoring parameters for medications

Teach subordinate technicians any new policy and procedure, as applicable

Develop and maintain technician work schedule to optimize business needs

Perform refill reminders for patients and follow up with prescriber if out of refills

File all completed prescriptions in accordance with department standards

At all times, maintain a courteous interaction with patients, visitors, departments and medical personnel

Assist with unpacking, labeling and stocking of incoming products

Exercise responsibility for the accuracy of all cash register transactions (including over-rings and shortages)

Ensure compliance with all established personnel and departmental polices

Prepare prescriptions for pharmacist's review, in accordance with federal and local regulations

Assist in employee retention efforts with positive feedback and identify room for improvement at all levels

Refer medical and medication related questions or issues which require professional judgement to a pharmacist for follow up

Other Related Duties:

May assist Pharmacist on compounding bulk medication, as allowable.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school graduation and active DC Pharmacy Technician license required, two years college training is desirable, Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred

Experience:

Two years of verified experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a retail, nursing home, medical center or hospital pharmacy, required.

Supervision Received:

Supervision is received on a task-by-task, and daily basis, dependent upon assigned duties as designated by a Registered Pharmacist. Functional supervision may be received from the Clinical Pharmacist or Pharmacist in Charge.

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, walk, and reach out for long periods of time in a clinical setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull over 20 lbs. as part of the role.
  • Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment.
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
