Engineer III - Natural Gas

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking an Engineer III to support our Natural Gas department. Applicants must reside near the client's service territory in the northwest and central/northern Indiana region.
This position will directly support projects within the client's natural gas distribution process, support data analytics, creation of notifications, work orders, invoicing, and financial reports utilizing enterprise resource planning software.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead engineering support for large-scale natural gas utility construction projects, including high-pressure pipeline installations, valve optimization, and regulating station upgrades.
- Prepare, review, and check designs, drawings, and project documentation related to construction execution and field validation.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for assigned projects, regularly updating clients and coordinating across departments.
- Utilize client proprietary software and systems for engineering workflows, work order generation, documentation, and permitting processes.
- Support the permitting process and interface with state, county, and local government agencies regarding project coordination.
- Conduct field support and constructability reviews to ensure compliance with engineering design, permits, and quality standards.
- Provide on-site support during critical construction activities, including tie-ins, pressure testing, system purging, and commissioning.
- Maintain consistent communication with project stakeholders, business partners, and field teams to align objectives and resolve field issues.
- Interpret and apply technical documents, schematics, and specifications to support accurate field implementation.
- Develop, maintain, and improve technical standards and historical design references used on client and internal projects.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable codes and regulations.
- Perform quality assurance activities including material verification, redlines, punch-list resolution, and as-built documentation.
- Complete all work in accordance with Orbital's Project Management System, client standards, and safety requirements.
- Collaborate with Orbital accounting and project controls to ensure proper documentation for budget tracking and invoicing.
- Support the development of departmental procedures and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering workflows.
- Serve as a technical resource for regional business development, client presentations, and customer service support.
- Balance office-based technical responsibilities with field-based execution, adapting to project phase and client expectations.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
- 5-8 years of experience in engineering or construction operations. Within the utility industry preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple field-based teams with competing priorities while maintaining schedule and budget.
- Strong understanding of construction procedures, field implementation methods, and material management practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and construction schedules, and to forecast associated labor, equipment, and material needs.
- Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards related to applicable engineer field and natural gas industry
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or EIT certification preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to interact effectively across organizational levels and field teams.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills; detail-oriented and adaptable to shifting priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with Safe Work Practices, use of PPE, and field safety compliance.
- Must have valid driver's license, insurance, and dependable transportation for travel to field sites.
- Must be able to work from home, field, or office environments depending on project needs.
- This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
