Job Description

The City of Bowie is seeking a highly motivated and forward-thinking professional to assist the Water Plant Superintendent in the management of the staff and operation of the City's Water Treatment Plant. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the completion of needed facility and equipment repairs, managing the inventory of chemicals and other critical supplies, maintaining accurate and up to date plant records, and preparing operational reports and providing them to appropriate governmental agencies. The incumbent will perform shift work, and all duties of a Class 4 certified operator.

Specific Duties Include (But are not limited to):

  • Ensuring proper water filtration and treatment to deliver safe drinking water in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Conducting and supervising lab testing procedures and preparing reports as required to meet regulatory requirements.

  • In absence of Water Plant Superintendent, manage all staff and activities of the water plant and must maintain a valid State of Maryland Certification for water.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Applicants must have demonstrable knowledge or experience in the following areas:

  • The principles, practices, and methods used in water treatment and pumping operations.
  • The operation of mechanical and electrical equipment used in water filtration and pumping plants.
  • Complete knowledge and understanding of the hazards and safety precautions required to work in a water treatment facility.
  • Basic proficiency in plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs.
  • Certain combinations of training and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Management, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in a water treatment or similar
  • Three years of supervisory experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license from state of residence.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Class 4 Water Treatment Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Maryland Water Sampler
