Animal Control Officer
Galveston County Health District is seeking a proactive Animal Control Officer to join our team! In this role, you'll be on the front lines of community safety - patrolling, responding to citizen calls, capturing stray or dangerous animals, and enforcing animal-related ordinances.

What You'll Do:
• Patrol assigned areas and enforce state and county animal control laws
• Capture and impound stray, diseased, injured, or aggressive animals
• Respond to public complaints involving dogs, cats, and occasionally wildlife
• Investigate cruelty, neglect, abandonment, and bite incidents
• Quarantine animals involved in bite cases and ensure proper follow-up
• Euthanize vicious, diseased, or unclaimed animals according to protocol
• Maintain controlled substance logbooks and detailed records in the animal services system
• Input data in the field using department-issued laptop
• Appear in court regarding citations and enforcement actions
• Maintain and operate a county-issued animal control vehicle
• Collaborate with shelter staff and public to promote humane animal care
• Perform other duties as assigned to support Animal Services operations
What We're Looking For:
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Basic Animal Control Officer Certification preferred - must be obtained within one year of employment
• Euthanasia certification preferred - must be obtained within 6 months of employment
• 1+ year of experience in government animal control or animal-related volunteer/rescue organizations preferred
• Skilled in handling potentially aggressive animals and using animal control equipment (e.g., catch poles, traps, muzzles)
• Ability to administer injections to dogs, cats, and wild animals
• Familiarity with local geography and ordinances preferred
• Valid Texas Driver's License or ability to obtain one
• Reliable transportation without depending on company vehicles
• Must have a satisfactory DMV/MVR background check
• Strong customer service, written, and verbal communication skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and data entry
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
• Compliance with GCHD immunization and ICS training policies
• Must pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening
Equivalent education and experience will be considered.
