Job Description

Berkeley College is seeking a Director of Personal Counseling. The Director of Personal Counseling will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to Counseling Services, in concurrence with the policies and procedures of the Department of Student Development and Campus Life.

The Director of Personal Counseling also serves as the campus ADA Coordinator for the Office of Accessibility Services and plays a critical role in ensuring equal access and opportunity for students with disabilities at the college. This position serves as the primary point of contact for students seeking accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Director will develop and implement the Counseling Center's mission and vision and will assist in the day-to-day management of the Counseling Center for New York City Midtown, Woodland Park, Woodbridge, Newark, and Online Campuses.
  • Specific responsibilities include evaluation and assessment of short-term therapy, crisis intervention, consultation, and educational/preventative outreach programming.
  • Provide coordination and supervision of personal counselor activities for the New York State campuses. Coordinate campus wellness and health education outreach programs and services for students.
  • Conduct regular group counseling meetings in collaboration with New Jersey campuses to review cases and to ensure proper disposition of cases.
  • Coordinate training and professional development for all campuses.
  • Make appropriate referrals to community agencies and/or private practitioners; maintain records of student contacts, correspondence, and statistics, with due regard to confidentiality; participate fully in the staff activities of the Office of Student Development & Campus Life, including written goals and objectives, staff development, and divisional reviews.
  • Participate in college-wide activities, committees, and faculty meetings, as appropriate.
  • The employees reporting directly to the Director include the following positions:
  • Full-time Personal Counselor for each on-site campus
  • New York City Midtown, Woodland Park, Woodbridge, Newark, and Part-time Personal Counselor for Online.
  • The Director of Personal Counseling/ADA Coordinator is responsible for conducting intake meetings, evaluating medical and psychological documentation, developing individualized accommodation plans, coordinating with faculty, and providing ongoing support to ensure the successful implementation of accommodations provided by the Office of Accessibility Services.
  • The Director of Personal Counseling will also serve as one of the AOD Task Force Members and serve as an integral member in supporting campus compliance with the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. Responsibilities include coordinating and attending task force meetings, assisting with data collection, contributing to the preparation of the Biennial Review Report, and supporting prevention, assessment, and education initiatives

Salary Range: $75,000 to $85,000

Job Location:

The Director of Personal Counseling is required to work on-site. This person will have an office at the Woodland Park, NJ campus and will regularly travel to other campuses where the job is needed

  • 2 days a week at the Woodland Park, NJ campus
  • 1 day a week at the Newark, NJ campus
  • 1 day a week at Woodbridge, NJ campus
  • 2 days a month at the New York City, NY campus
  • Remote work may be permitted under certain circumstances.

Educational Requirements:

  • Masters required, licensed in counseling, psychology, or social work.
  • Doctorate preferred, licensed in counseling, psychology, or social work.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) (NJ) and Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) (NY) preferred.

Training and/or Experience:

  • Five years' experience; 2 to 3 years as a staff member in a clinical setting, and at least 2 years in a management or supervisory capacity.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible management-level experience in a student counseling office at a higher education institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills to effectively manage a team of counselors and support staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of theories and practices related to personal counseling and mental health support.
  • Excellent communication skills to provide guidance and support to clients in a compassionate and empathetic manner.
  • Ability to develop and implement counseling programs and services tailored to the unique needs of clients.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage caseloads, schedules, and documentation effectively.
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments and external organizations to provide comprehensive support services to clients.
  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines and professional standards for personal counseling practices
  • Ability to analyze data and trends to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance services.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address complex client issues and provide effective solutions.
  • Ability to stay updated on current research and best practices in the field of personal counseling and mental health support.
