Job Description
Job Summary: Lead and manage the Company's safety initiatives such as “Goal Zero”, safety loss control programs, and the continued development of the excellent safety culture at SW Funk Industrial. The Safety Director will also manage the overall safety program and ensure compliance with all regulations. This role will serve as the face and evangelist for our safety program and performance to clients and employees.
Functions/Responsibilities:
- Leads the development of and clearly articulates Company's safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures to build a safety culture dedicated to behaviors that lead to best-in-class results.
- Provides proactive leadership and assumes ownership of building a best-in-class safety culture by:
- Anticipating problems & providing solutions.
- Sharing knowledge with and providing training to all levels of management, field staff, preconstruction, and project teams.
- Interacting with clients and subcontractors.
- Creating an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment to promote employee engagement.
- Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and conclusions while monitoring results to make improvements or take corrective action.
- Ensures safety & health training meets the needs of internal and external (client & regulating entities) requirements, so staff have safety training to safely perform tasks and jobs.
- Leads incident investigations.
- Manages hazard assessment activities by:
- Conducting and/or supervising safety inspections.
- Analyzing inspection and incident data to identify opportunities to develop preventive and corrective practices.
- Develop annual plans & budgets for safety & health initiatives, including training.
- Leads and manages the safety staff.
- Manages safety incentive programs that reward targeted behaviors & results.
- Manages Workers' Compensation Claims and vehicle claims.
- Manages the return to work/restricted duty program.
- Leads or participates in Safety Committee.
- Manages the administration of the motor vehicle records program.
- Manages the drug and alcohol abuse and testing program.
- Perform site inspections and document daily (Avg. 7 per week).
- Visit all job sites on a regular basis.
- Ensure Safety Manual compliance.
- Perform regular safety meetings.
- Ensure field supervision completes proper safety paperwork.
- Complete HASPs, AHA, and other pre-job safety related processes.
- Management of the insurance captive and events.
- Complete and manage all safety related incidents.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental health & safety, safety management, construction, or a related field.
- OSHA 500 required.
- MSHA Trainer preferable.
- CSP certification preferable.
- Minimum 10 years experience in construction industry safety management.
- Minimum 5 years experience managing & leading a structured safety program; self-performing general contractor or specialty contractor strongly preferred.
- Experience with construction within existing industrial facilities preferable.
- In-depth technical knowledge of construction-related OSHA, MSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices.
- Experience managing staff and third-party hired firms.
- Must be an effective communicator, generate professionally written material, and deliver effective verbal presentations.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Extensive safety knowledge and experience, preferably in an industrial setting.
- High level of emotional intelligence to ensure client comfort and obtain buy-in from Field Operations and field trades.
- Technical skills to complete processes effectively.
Working Conditions:
- Significant work at construction job sites, during all stages, in all types of weather conditions.
- Minimal overnight travel.
- Must be able to perform activities requiring the use of arms and legs, including climbing ladders/scaffolding, lifting & handling materials, walking, balancing, and stooping.
- Must be able to speak & hear detailed information through oral communication.
- Must be able to see clearly and recognize small details.
- Must be able to provide presentations to large crowds and professionally communicate with key clients at an executive level.
