Youth Sports Professional                                 

Employment Type: Full-time
Location: Carnegie or Lawrenceville
Hours: Varies
Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt
Compensation: $17.00 - 20.00 per hour

What You’ll Do

The Youth Sports Professional  is responsible for overseeing a multitude of sport programs while handling the responsibility of planning, developing, overseeing, implementing and supervising those sports programs at various BGCWPA Clubhouses and locations, both in the after-school and evening during the school year and during the daytime in summer.  Some weekend programming will also occur. This position reports to the Senior Clubhouse Director at Carnegie (630 Washington Ave, Carnegie) or Lawrenceville (4600 Butler Street, Pittsburgh).

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Teach specified athletic program skill sets to youth that emphasize on technique, rules, and strategies 
  • Educate on the importance of sportsmanship, cooperation, and responsibility to team members, opponents, and coaches
  • Be onsite for daily programming to supervise the sports instructors / coaches/ referees/supporting staff and support children, families and community during programming hours.
  • Work variable shifts to include evenings and weekends. 
  • Supervise and conduct safe practices and contests.
  • Encourage all athletes and offer fair play for each student that wishes to participate.
  • Positively promote recruitment efforts representing BGCWPA.
  • Respond to player injuries by using first aid techniques trained by BGCWPA upon orientation and every year thereafter.
  • Professional communication with parents/guardians, and BGCWPA team members.
  • Understanding of the rules of each sport and how to teach the skills needed for each sport.
  • Ensure a healthy and safe environment; ensure facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained and in proper working order.

Additionally the Youth Sports Professional may need to support the Clubhouse Director & Athletic Team with the following duties:

Management & Supervision

  • Coordination of staff schedules
  • Monthly staff meetings with all the Athletics Department employees & coordination with Administration, Clubhouse Directors and other program leads (teens, preschool, STEAM, rentals) 
  • Provide feedback for Part-Time Sports Instructors
 

Programs & Operations

  • Ensure compliance with all BGCA regulations
  • Support feedback collection from participants
 

Family & Community Engagement

  • Family & community outreach for youth recruitment to meet enrollment goals. 
  • Weekly communications to families 
  • Support the enrollment process for families 
  • Returning phone calls and emails within 24 hours to ensure responsiveness 
  • Monthly check-in with community or school leadership to check in on the relationship and address needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High school diploma or GED and 2,500 hours of experience working with youth (babysitting counts—excluding family)
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree  from an accredited college or university in education, sports management, youth development, or the human services field. An associates degree or equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Strong interest in youth development
  • Advanced customer service skills
  • Reliable, team-oriented, and adaptable
  • Experience planning, implementing and supervising athletic programs based on the developmental needs of young people
  • Comfortable using or learning Google Suite
  • Perform all additional duties and tasks as assigned by leadership/supervisors

Onboarding process

  • Must complete a health physical and TB test
  • Clearances Act 33, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR letter
  • Employment is contingent upon being able to successfully pass a background check.
