Job Description

The HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) CONTROLS TECHNICIAN uses knowledge of pneumatic and electrical/electronic controls to perform skilled work installing, altering, calibrating, repairing, and maintaining HVAC control systems, building automation control systems, and energy management control systems to ensure safe and correct environmental and ecological conditions.

Representative Duties:

  • Practices and promotion of the Capstone customer satisfaction guarantee philosophy.
  • Analyzes, diagnoses, and repairs direct digital control systems at customer's location.
  • Understands complex HVAC sequence of operations on VAV, make-up air, RTU, hydronic, and other typical HVAC control systems.
  • Prepares for on-site installation and repairs by examining building layout, anticipating difficulties, gathering materials, and coordinating on-site work, as necessary.
  • Records parts, material, labor, and other cost data per assignment and returns unused resources.
  • Represents Capstone by serving as a direct customer contact.
  • Maintains assigned stock of inventory, company equipment, and documents all related activities.
  • Documents work by completing paperwork on each job, including daily time, progress, and duration; and maintaining files.
  • Responsible for testing, downloading programming, starting up, commissioning, and servicing on assigned projects.
  • Uses a variety of hand tools, interprets control drawings, plans, and specifications, to mount, assemble, test, and program a variety of control systems.
  • Understands control systems involving local area networks, system integration, open technologies, software-based interfaces, HVAC controls, fire/security systems and other facility/infrastructure management systems. Familiarity with systems that involve advanced solutions such as BACNET, Lonmark and other open technologies for building automation/integration solutions.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, site surveys, replacement, and modifications as needed or requested by customers.
  • Provides training and follow-up training at customer site.
  • Provides sales leads to appropriate personnel.
  • Turns in all required paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • Identifies parts to order for repairs and timeliness of need.
  • Provides technical support to customers on assigned projects.
  • Inspects vehicles by checking vehicle condition and literature supplies.
  • Maintains vehicles by keeping records of service manuals, scheduling, completed repairs and maintenance service.
  • Regular travel requirements with occasional overnight stays.
  • Flexibility to work overtime/weekends, as required.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate and graduate of a post-secondary HVACR program of instruction of two or more years in duration.
  • Two or more years of successful and full-time HVACR experience, either as a commercial service or commercial installation technician.
  • Good oral and reading skills, including the ability to read and apply manufacturers' instructions and to clearly communicate with residential, commercial, and industrial customers, suppliers, and all Capstone employees.
  • Physical ability to perform all duties noted above under the conditions, circumstances and extreme weather found in Texas.
  • Interest and initiative in maintaining and advancing his/her HVACR skills through a combination of self-study, company training, manufacturers' workshops, and other professional development activities.
  • Current Texas operator's license and the ability to operate all vehicles in the corporate fleet within 30 days of initial employment. Incumbent must be insurable by current Capstone insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work under pressure of time, non-standard schedule, supervision considerations, weather, customer needs, and backlog constraints.
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Access, in the most current version), PowerPoint, and WordPerfect.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in HVAC control systems and/or local area network support and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and experience in management information systems for the HVACR contracting industry.
  • Knowledge of the software programs currently in use at Capstone and in the controls industry.
  • Advanced experience with the Internet and wide area networks.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
