Job Description

The principal role of the Computer Lab Apprentice is to train and develop skills learned from the Computer Lab Supervisors and Technicians. Regular tasks include installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and/or upgrading computer hardware, along with installing, upgrading, testing, and troubleshooting software. The Computer Lab Apprentice provides weekend staff coverage, and works with supervisors and technicians during the week. The Computer Lab Apprentice has the opportunity to work with various Computer Lab staff in their areas of expertise. This is to provide the Apprentice with a well-rounded learning experience, and help them discover their niche in the Computer Lab. This is a professional position that demands courteous and polite interactions with customers and other employees.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Staff the service desks on a regularly scheduled basis, offering assistance to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

2. Acting as a backup for Computer Lab Supervisors and/or Technicians when they are not available.

3. Hardware\software diagnosis and repairs.

4. Complete internal documentation when required and utilize help request system to document work and customer interaction.

5. Work with the Computer Lab Supervisors and Technicians with their daily tasks in order to learn from them and assist them.

6. Communicates regularly with Computer Lab staff and assist in communication between the student workers and the staff members.

7. Occasional coordination of small projects as assigned.

8. Monitor the productivity of student workers by actively supervising them and being available to them.

9. Contribute to in the discussions regarding performance evaluations of the student workers.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Basic knowledge of computer trouble shooting with experience.

2. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and standard office technologies.

3. Strong attention to accuracy and detail.

4. Willingness and ability to provide consistent and exceptional customer.

5. Promptness and reliability to follow scheduled hours.

6. Willingness to protect the integrity of Liberty’s IT systems and follow necessary security policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Previous knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing hardware and software issues, networks, and software issues.

2. Experience working in computer labs or similar environments.

3. Experience with Mac and Linux systems.

4. Experience with basic scripting (e.g., Power Shell, batch files).
