What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The hiring range for this position is $118,000 - $152,000/year. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work three (3) days in office. For your in-office days, you can expect to work on-site at the Webb Municipal Building (201 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202).

The Development Services Division of the Community Planning and Development Department administers Denver's building, fire and zoning codes through review, permitting, and inspection of all new development projects in Denver. We also review existing tenant finish, core and shell installations, additions, and site electrical work. Through each of these critical roles, Development Services helps to implement the city's vision for an outstanding Denver.

The City and County of Denver's Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is recruiting for a highly motivated Electrical Plans Review Engineer to join our Development Services Division. We are seeking an individual with expertise in design and relevant electrical power and lighting systems with the ability to serve as a technical expert on such issues, and the ability to research effective solutions is highly desirable. The Electrical Plans Review Engineer will work with our customers to research effective solutions and serve as a technical expert that assists design professionals with engineering standards.

Specifically, as the Electrical Plans Review Engineer, you will:

  • Quickly and accurately review complex electrical construction drawings and specifications for compliance to the Denver Building Code for new and existing buildings, as well as photovoltaic systems.

  • Support Denver International Airport (DEN) with the DEN electrical plans reviewer, including assisting with complex electrical plans reviews specific to DEN, which requires a strong background in commercial electrical systems and code application.

  • Assist design professionals with engineering standards, coordinating with other electrical engineering functions such as fire alarms, utilities, life safety systems, security, contractors, and appropriate managers and staff.

  • Perform non-DEN electrical plan review, as part of the overall workload.

  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as work independently reporting directly to the Engineer/Architect Supervisor for the section.

  • Assist inspectors with difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments.

  • Participate in recommending and establishing policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and specifications, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing methods, policies, procedures, and proposed local and national model code modifications and issues.

What You'll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Direct electrical design experience with a wide variety of buildings (both multi-family residential and commercial).

  • Experience in design and construction of high-performance buildings, and - at a minimum - experience utilizing the National Electrical Code and IECC.

  • Familiarity with emergency power systems, residential and commercial photovoltaic systems, and electric vehicle charging systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to understand, interpret, and enforce the intent of the codes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively - verbally and in writing; ability to work as part of a team to support both internal and external customers.

  • Experience using Bluebeam Revu

  • Problem solver that can envision various outcomes and plan accordingly to mitigate risky outcomes

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field as required by the specific opening.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional engineering experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license OR three (3) years of professional architecture experience after obtaining an Architect license. (Some positions may require experience in a specific engineering area). Additional directly related engineering/architecture experience can be substituted for up to two (2) years of the three (3) years of post-licensed experience.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • Licenses/Certifications:

  • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application. Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
