ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

This position is in the Safety and Health Services Division as part of BNL’s Environment, Safety, and Health Directorate (ESHD). Maintaining and protecting the safety and health of BNL employees, the public and the environment is our mission. Our professionals and technical staff provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by use of both field-deployed Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) personnel, an Industrial Hygiene Lab which provides monitoring equipment, sample preparation, and respirator fit testing, and a RCRA-permitted Waste Management Facility. 


POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The candidate will serve as an Environment, Safety and Health Representative (ESHR) to advocate and provide technical resources on matters of the environment, health, and safety. 
This hands-on position involves partnering with line management representatives, employees, science researchers, senior staff and trade unions. Fieldwork venues include but are not limited to: laboratories (chemical, biological, physical, nanomaterials, etc.); construction sites; physical plants (infrastructure and maintenance) and large experimental equipment. This is a on-site field-deployed position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identification of job hazards, exposure evaluation and development of controls; preparation of written training material and job procedures.

  • Preparation and presentation of briefings, classes and seminars on environmental, health and safety topics; consultation with others on compliance with Department of Energy, OSHA and national consensus standards and requirements.

  • Conducting environmental, health, and safety inspections and tracking remedial efforts; and conducting project design reviews, work planning, construction/experimental reviews, fabrication and operations activity reviews.

  • Requires use of equipment designed to inspect, test, monitor, and measure safe levels of environmental and safety hazards.

  • Work locations may include: chemical laboratory, research, clinical facilities; construction projects; roof work; and field conditions in or adjacent to chemical, radiological, biological, and/or hazardous material work areas.

  • As the Environment, Safety, and Health Representative, the candidate will act as a technical resource to recommend and conduct: general safety reviews (e.g., fall protection, scaffolds, etc); industrial hygiene monitoring for health and safety compliance (e.g., chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors); general environmental and waste compliance oversight with a focus on regulated wastes and chemical hazard awareness for hazardous and flammable chemicals in laboratories and other areas.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety or closely related field of study. Coursework in safety engineering, occupational and environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, public health, toxicology, and similar. 

  • Knowledge of basic environment and waste management.

  • Must demonstrate ability to present ideas and concepts orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner to communicate technical information and interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding including: senior management; line workers; engineers; researchers; trade workers; etc.

  • Experience in Microsoft Office.

  • Professional experience must demonstrate the ability to effectively initiate and lead projects or programs with minimal supervision. 

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of industrial and occupational safety/health programs; pertinent laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; principles and techniques of employee training; and exposure report preparation and statistical analysis.

  • Must demonstrate a broad knowledge in and familiarity with mechanical systems, including test equipment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have three plus (3+) years relevant work experience showing increasing independence in responsibility as a practicing environmental, health, and safety professional.

  • Experience in a Research and Development environment.

  • Qualified to submit for certification as: Occupational Health and Safety Technologist, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist.

  • A strong background in health and safety regulations is highly desirable.

  • Experience and knowledge in areas of electrical safety, lock out tag out, fall protection, confined spaces, ladder safety, chemical safety, asbestos, personal protective equipment, noise, respiratory protection and similar.

  • Experience with Federal, New York State and Suffolk County environmental regulations especially CWA, CAA, EPCRA, NYS Petroleum Bulk Storage Regulations, SCDHS Article 12, etc. 

  • Experience with emergency Industrial Hygiene, Safety, and Spill Response.

Additional Information:                                                                           

  • The position may require occasionally working after hours or occasional weekends to respond to emergency or non-emergency situations.

  • This is an on-site position.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $77500 - $118000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
