Job Description:
LSU Veterinary Medicine's (Vet Med) Oncology Department provides chemotherapy, external radiation and injectable radiation to treat veterinary cancer patients. We work in conjunction with all other services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (anesthesia, internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology, surgery, BZEM, large animal and emergency). The oncology service is vital in the clinical training of 4th year clinical veterinary students. The oncology service also provides sedation and general anesthesia for oncology patients for routine treatments, imaging, minor biopsies and bone marrow aspirates.
Veterinary Technician 1
30% Assist with all aspects of providing chemotherapy. Task include insertion and maintenance of clean stick catheters, administration of IV, SQ, IM injections, monitoring of patient vital signs, obtaining blood pressures, blood, and urine. Ability to follow chemotherapy and radiation safety protocols.
20% Assist with restraint and positioning for a variety of techniques. Basic restraint for exams and procedures such as venipuncture to advanced positioning and maintaining positioning for advanced procedures radiation therapy. Assist with lifting all sizes and weights of patients. Assist with diagnostic sample collection (urine, blood etc.). and appropriate preparation, protocol, handling and submission of samples for example blood cultures. Assist with placement of IV catheters and troubleshooting issues. Assist with set up and preparation for fine needle aspirates. Assist in the day to day operations of the Oncology unit, including cleaning, stocking, disinfecting equipment and environment. Participate and instruct set up and clean up for different procedures.
20% Assist with client communication and scheduling patient appointments and procedures. Communicate and maintain a record of such with rDVMs, clients, and other outside providers (diagnostic centers, or special-order entities for devices are supplements). Assist with maintaining complete records, estimates, and entering charges.
20% Assist in the teaching process of the veterinary students, interns, residents and veterinary technicians.
10% Participate in the small animal blood bank and take on call for blood bank. Participate and meet the requirements and obligations of holiday assignments in support of SA ICU and ER as scheduled. Respond as called upon as an emergency response personnel in the event of activation in response to any number and variety of emergent situations, to include outside normal duty hours and shift length. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Veterinary Technician 2

Communicate and maintain a record of such with rDVMs, clients, and other outside providers (diagnostic centers, or special-order entities for devices are supplements). Perform and provide general instructions (to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, veterinary technician students); technical skills to include but not limited to venipuncture, proper handling and submission of biological samples, and sterile techniques. Perform and teach the process and procedures as well as other related duties as the pertain to the operation of the SA hospital, specifically in support of the surgery service.
10% Perform sedation protocols, administration, as well as monitoring of sedated and/or anesthetized patients and recovery. Be involved in and instruct protocol selection, calculation/verify sedation and analgesia for patients, proper logging, acquiring, and administration of sedation for patients. Monitor patients under sedation and prepare for reversal or intervention if complications occur.
10% Participate in the small animal blood bank and take on call for blood bank. Participate and meet the requirements and obligations of holiday assignments in support of SA ICU and ER as scheduled. Respond as called upon as an emergency response personnel in the event of activation in response to any number and variety of emergent situations, to include outside normal duty hours and shift length. Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of applicable experience OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 2 years of applicable experience OR CVT or equivalent with 2 years of applicable experience OR 5 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties OR 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician 1 at LSU SVM.
Veterinary Technician 3

Special or Physical qualifications:
Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
