Job Description

Job Overview: The Montana Veterans' Home is a Medicare/Medicaid and Veterans' Administration certified facility that has been providing services to Veterans since 1896. Admission is for honorably discharged veterans who qualify for skilled/intermediate nursing care or domiciliary self-care living. Spouses of veterans may be admitted on a space-available basis.

This position provides nursing care to ensure veterans are safe and healthy. Other responsibilities include: 1) Assessing, planning, implementing, and documenting nursing care for residents; 2) Administering prescribed medications and treatments; and 3) Providing guidance and assistance to LPNs and CNAs as necessary.

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities):

A. Resident Care (80%)

  • Assesses, plans, implements, and documents nursing care for residents following accepted nursing standard practices.
  • Completes residents' assessments as needed.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers to assess, initiate, implement, or evaluate resident care plans.
  • Monitors, documents, and reports symptoms or changes in residents' health and well-being.
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments following professional standards and controlled substance regulations.
  • Responds to emergencies by contacting appropriate staff and initiates proper intervention.
  • Provides individual counseling, and educates residents and family members about healthcare needs.

B. Interdisciplinary Team (15%)

  • Establishes compassion environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to residents, families, and friends.
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to professional standards and participating with the quality assurance program.
  • Protects residents and employees by adhering to infection control and safety standards.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to LPNs and CNAs as necessary.

C. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Orients new residents and nursing staff.
  • Submits requests for supplies or equipment.
  • Coordinates staffing coverage to ensure residents needs are met.
  • Provides immediate intervention with inadequate staff performance and refers information to supervisor.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Lift 50# rarely; Lift 15-20# frequently; Reach forward and below frequently; Push/Pull 60# occasionally; 10-20# occasionally. Dexterity for handling instruments and equipment. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):

Required for the first day of work:

  • General knowledge of current professional standards and Montana nursing statues and rules.
  • Knowledge of nursing, treatment planning, and medications.
  • General knowledge of geriatric resident care.
  • Effective time management and problem solving skills.
  • Skills with diagnostic instruments such as glucometer, oxygen equipment, electrocardiography.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain resident confidentiality and comply with protected health information.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and patience.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Montana RN License.
  • Two years experience as an RN.
  • At least one year geriatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Other equivalent combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
