Job Description
We're looking for an Associate System Operator- Resilience Engineering and Operations for our state-of-the-art quantum computers that are based on trapped ion technology. You'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to operate and improve IonQ's industry-leading quantum computers. Recent graduates in physics and related fields are encouraged to apply; we will train you in quantum computer operation. You will work onsite at our facility with the option to work remotely. This position involves participation in a global, follow-the-sun on-call rotation that includes evenings, nights, and weekends. Shift schedules will vary and are coordinated between the US and Switzerland-based teams.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations to keep our systems running at peak performance.
- Ensure high uptime and performance of our commercial quantum computers, through alert response, monitoring, and engineering of state-of-the-art quantum computers.
- Work collaboratively with other System Operators on improvements and processes and practices to make operating quantum systems easier and more efficient.
- Communicate with customers to coordinate access and inform on system status.
- Remotely interfacing with quantum systems to impact performance using documented procedures.
- Interpreting telemetry to aid in deeper understanding of quantum system status.
- Clearly communicating with teams working across multiple time zones.
You'd be a good fit with:
- Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or another physical science.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Disposition to work flexible working hours, on a 24/7 on-call shift where the rotation changes as needed.
- Desire and capability to work closely on a team that is distributed - excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- A propensity for learning new things and fascination with emerging technologies.
- Capable of adapting for an ever-growing and ever-changing work environment.
- Desire to learn and improve through training and self-study.
You'd be a great fit with:
- 1+ year of laboratory experience in atomic and/or optical physics
- Hands-on experience with optical alignments, laser stabilization, and/or AOMs
- A background in data analysis or data science
- Experience with JavaScript or Python

Location: This role will work onsite at one of our facilities in College Park, MD, or Bothell, WA, with the option to work most days of the week remotely.
Travel: Less than 10%
The approximate base salary range for this position is $81,000 - $106,050. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.
