Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
To provide patient and family focused care in accordance with the Sky Lakes mission philosophy, policies and procedures. Responsible for administrative and clerical records involved with indirect nursing care services. Emergency department monitor tech/unit secretary is a member of the nursing health care team who functions under the direction of the department director, clinical manager, and charge nurse and is responsible for chart handling, processing, and secretarial/ clerical functions of the department.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: EKG experience and successful completion of EKG class; Experience with the Spacelab monitors and/or ability to learn within 90 day probation period; Knowledge of medical terminology, typing and basic computer skills; Excellent communication skills both oral and written; Must be willing to work varied hours and every other weekend; Must be willing to take additional courses as requested; The operation of the Spacelab monitors including but not limited to trouble shooting problems and working with the following: ICW, Central station, hardwire setup and telemetry packs. Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: Problem solving skills; Experience in dealing with the public; and Six/eight months of clerical experience.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Must maintain knowledge of and practice safe body mechanics according to the Sky Lakes policies. Must be physically able to stoop, bend and reach. Additional frequency of reaching due to the operation of the monitoring system. The mental demands will vary and at times be more stressful. This is due in part to daily activity of multiple discharges and admissions. High stress levels of more seriously ill patients and their families. Multitude of diagnostic testing and procedures which requires significant phone coordination. Frequent sitting, some walking and standing. Must be able to occasionally lift 50 pounds or more. Able to remain calm under stress. Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a quick manner. Must be able to demonstrate initiative and a willingness to learn.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Emergency Room Monitor Tech will meet all the requirements of the Sky Lakes job description and in addition, the following criteria:
- Performs skills in accordance with the ED’s standards of care. Examples include but are not limited to:
o EKG rhythm strip interpretation;
o Completely and accurately labels all patient information to be turned over to medical records;
o Possesses knowledge of use, access and maintenance of equipment needed for assigned area;
o Photocopiers, fax machine, telephone system, Interpreter AT&T phone system, EPIC;
o PCI Office Automation, computer, printers, Med-Net radio, ICW, Spacelab monitoring system.
- Promotes healing by maintaining a peaceful, orderly and clean environment.
- Checks and replenishes all chart forms, assists in coordinating services performed by other hospital personnel, and obtains patient transportation as appropriate.
- Completely and accurately obtains and assists with COBRA paperwork for patient transfers.
- Maintains daily “on-call” physicians and x-ray call lists.

- Maintains competency in all position responsibilities included on ED Monitor Tech Skills Checklist.
