Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapy Assistant is responsible for treating patients who require physical therapy services. S/he uses physical treatment procedures to help improve mobility and relieve pain and disability caused by disease or injury. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the physical therapy assistant provides treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings, executing the goals given by the supervising physical therapist.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job's purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable.
- Implements patient care based on the Physical Therapist's evaluation and the patient's present level of function related to their physical, psychosocial, age and medical needs, involving the patient, as well as the family/caregiver in the planning and delivery of care.
- Delivers safe, appropriate, planned patient care with accurate and timely documentation. Accurately communicates care and patient condition to patient, family, and all others involved in patient's care.
- Document care, patient response, and any changes to original plan of care.
- Notifies supervising therapist and/or physician, as appropriate, in a timely manner with regard to the condition and status of the patient.
- Ensures a safe environment for the patient by maintaining a clean treatment area, reporting any concerns or issues with the equipment, and considering the patient's age and condition.
- Prepares supplies, equipment, and treatment area for patient treatments.
- Directs and supports patient care activities provided by Rehab Techs and students, providing education and training as needed. Ensures that provided care is appropriate for the skill level of the caregiver, and that patient age and level-of-care requirements of are considered when reviewing treatment plan.
- Provides appropriate education to patient and family and completes the required documentation. Performs appropriate interventions as applicable.
- Participates in department meetings and case conferences.
- Maintains knowledge and skills to provide safe, effective and efficient care for patients.

Requirements
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum Associates Degree in Physical Therapy Assistant
- New Mexico Physical Therapy Assistant license
- AHA BLS within 90 days of hire
- Ability to pass the Rehab Department Aquatic Competency test within 90 days of hire if aquatic therapy will be part of work/treatment requirements
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- 1 year experience as a Physical Therapy Assistant preferred
