Job Description:

Summary:

The Office of Merit Awards (which is part of the AU Career Center) mentors applicants for nationally competitive, merit-based scholarships such as the Fulbright grants and the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. It also provides academic enrichment to high-performing sophomores and transfer students through the Early Identification Program. We serve some of AU's most talented students in all majors and at all levels of study. Mentoring these students as a Graduate Advising Fellow is highly rewarding.

Responsibilities:

  • Advising prospective applicants for nationally competitive scholarships.

  • Managing or co-managing OMA's advising on certain competitions.

  • Conducting information sessions on key scholarships.

  • Helping to mentor candidates in areas of the applicant's expertise.

  • Advising EIP students.

  • Updating Canvas sites and informational handouts.

  • Keeping advising notes and working with staff to recruit students.

  • Tracking outcomes.

  • Contributing to the annual report.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:

  • Part-Time.

  • 20 hours per week.

  • Academic Year 2025-26 graduate student employees will be expected to work on campus at least two days a week and work virtually other times.

Salary Range:

  • $46.43 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Applicants must be rising 5th year doctoral students at American University (or if SOC, rising 4th year doctoral students).

  • Relevant work experience.

  • The ideal candidate will be a strong student who enjoys working with other high-performing students.

  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience.

  • Will relate well to faculty members and to scholarship program representatives.

  • Excellent public speaking skills and strong oral and written proficiency in English are required.

  • Since scholarship competitions are deadline driven and are bound

  • by many rules, a demonstrated commitment to detail is also imperative.

  • Significant up-front work will be required to learn the basics of scholarship competitions.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Candidates who have studied abroad and/or have a proficiency in a foreign language.
