Description

The National Builder Group (NBG), a subsidiary of The Challenger Group (TCG), is one of the fastest-growing networks of homebuilding companies in the United States, with operations across 11 states. To support our expanding operations and strengthen our internal accounting capabilities, we are seeking a highly capable and experienced Vice President of Accounting. This executive will lead the accounting function for NBG and play a vital leadership role across our network of owner-operated building companies.

This position will manage and mentor a high-performing accounting team-including the corporate controller and future controllers-and be directly responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting, accounting controls, cash management, and compliance. In addition, this role will collaborate with the broader leadership team to optimize the use of capital and ensure efficient financial operations across all companies.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000/year

Position Summary: The Vice President of Accounting is responsible for leading all accounting operations for the National Builder Group and its affiliated companies. This includes financial reporting, internal controls, cash management, compliance, and insurance oversight. Reporting to the President & CEO, the VP of Accounting will ensure timely and accurate monthly financial statements, oversee the accounting team, and help drive effective decision-making through strong financial leadership.

Supervisory Responsibilities: National Builder Group's Accounting Team

Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Oversees the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for all operating entities (20+ companies)
  • Leads and mentors the accounting team, including the Controller and future team members, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and excellence
  • Establishes and maintains a strong internal control environment across all companies
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and all relevant financial regulations and standards
  • Coordinates financial and accounting activities with the Chief Accounting Officer of The Challenger Group
  • Coordinates with auditors and tax professionals to ensure timely and accurate filings

Cash & Capital Management

  • Manages day-to-day cash flow across all operating companies to ensure adequate liquidity and optimal use of financial resources
  • Collaborates with the CEO and executive team to monitor capital needs and coordinate construction funding
  • Tracks and manages debt obligations and helps determine optimal financing strategies
  • Supports the development and analysis of proformas for land acquisition opportunities

Strategic Planning & Budgeting

  • Supports company-wide budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with Owner Operators and the company operations team
  • Contributes to quarterly reforecasts to adapt to changing business conditions
  • Implements or enhances accounting systems and budgeting tools to increase reporting efficiency and consistency
  • Develops, monitors, and reports key financial KPIs across operating companies
  • Assists the CEO with the preparation of quarterly board meeting materials, ensuring that financial reports, commentary, and supporting schedules are accurate and aligned with strategic messaging

Compliance, Insurance & Risk Oversight

  • Oversees company-wide insurance programs in collaboration with legal
  • Ensures all companies maintain adequate coverage and are in compliance with corporate insurance standards
  • Ensures adherence to regulatory and internal financial policies
  • Partners with legal and HR on matters related to governance, compliance, and financial integrity

Owner-Operator Support & Communications

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with owner-operators by providing clear, timely, and relevant financial reports and insights
  • Works with owner-operators to ensure alignment of financial strategy and execution
  • Supports financial training and process development for newly launched companies

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred but not required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting leadership experience
  • Previous experience in residential construction or homebuilding preferred
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, financial controls, and reporting requirements
  • Strong experience establishing policies and procedures, working with financial systems, budgeting tools, and cash flow management
  • Experience managing a multi-entity environment with complex ownership structures a plus
