Description
The Budget Analyst works closely with department directors to help plan, track, and manage departmental and grant budgets. This role monitors spending, analyzes budget data, prepares reports, and makes recommendations to keep budgets on track. The Budget Analyst ensures that funds are used appropriately, grant requirements are met, and financial information is accurate and up to date. Strong attention to detail, organization, and proficiency with financial systems are essential to help the organization stay fiscally responsible and compliant.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist department directors with planning, preparing, and managing budgets for programs and grants.
- Track and monitor departmental and grant expenditures to ensure budgets are followed.
- Analyze budget data and identify trends, variances, and potential issues.
- Ensure all spending complies with internal policies and grant requirements.
- Support the preparation of grant budgets and funding proposals.
- Reconcile budget information with accounting records, including travel and credit card reports.
- Provide guidance to staff on proper budgeting procedures and financial documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of budget changes, adjustments, and approvals.
- Collaborate with accounting to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Identify and recommend corrective actions for budget discrepancies.
- Assist with forecasting future budget needs based on historical data and departmental plans.
- Participate in internal audits and support grant compliance reviews.
- Use financial software and spreadsheets to organize, analyze, and report financial information.
- Respond to requests from management for financial information or special budget analyses.
- Assist in developing and updating budget procedures and documentation to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Strong analytical skills to review financial data and identify trends or discrepancies.
- High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in budgeting and reporting.
- Proficiency with financial software and spreadsheets, including advanced Excel functions.
- Ability to organize, track, and manage multiple budgets and deadlines simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to explain financial information clearly.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with directors and accounting staff.
- Problem-solving skills to identify financial issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Knowledge of budgeting principles, grant requirements, and financial regulations.
- Strong time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet reporting deadlines.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in budgeting, financial analysis, or accounting in a professional setting.
- Experience working with grant budgets, financial reporting, or compliance requirements is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to use standard office equipment such as a computer, printer, phone, and calculator.
- Ability to review and analyze financial documents, spreadsheets, and reports.
- Ability to occasionally lift or move items up to 25 pounds, such as files or office supplies.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of applicable tribal drug test.
- Successful completion of applicable tribal background check.
- Must pass background investigation for suitability of character identified in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no serious violations.
