JOB SUMMARY:

The Commissioning Building Performance Engineer provides hands-on commissioning and performance testing support for mechanical systems in commercial and institutional facilities. This role focuses on commissioning, equipment installation verification, and functional performance testing—spending roughly half of their time in the field.

This position is ideal for someone with a mechanical trades background who is looking to grow into commissioning and analytics work. The engineer will support commissioning projects, oversee mechanical installations, perform system analytics, and assist with measurement and verification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform commissioning and functional performance testing for building mechanical systems
  • Monitor and verify proper equipment installation and operation
  • Perform and document field observations and system testing results
  • Conduct basic measurement and verification activities
  • Support analytics and building performance data review
  • Manage or assist with project-level commissioning activities from start to finish
  • Write commissioning reports and maintain accurate project documentation
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and other trades as needed
  • Participate in commissioning meetings and project turnover sessions (cont.)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical equipment
  • Hands-on experience with system testing, start-up, and commissioning
  • Ability to work effectively in the field, often on active construction sites
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Comfort with basic software tools for data entry and analysis

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires a combination of working in an office environment and routine visits to project jobsites up to 50% of working hours. Project jobsites present typical construction and outdoor conditions that require the use of personal protective equipment for safety purposes.  Lifting and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds more frequently is required.  Must be comfortable climbing a ladder infrequently.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Annual base salary range is $75,000-90,000 and varies based on experience

POSITION TYPE AND HOURS

  • Full-time, exempt
  • Typical Monday–Friday schedule with flexibility as needed
  • Local travel required (up to 50%), with occasional out-of-state travel

CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE

  • 2–3 years of mechanical, Test and Balance (TAB), or commissioning experience
  • Hands-on mechanical trades experience strongly preferred (HVAC, mechanical systems, etc.)
  • No degree required; equivalent experience considered
  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings and system operation
  • Understanding of basic energy efficiency principles and building controls
