The listed pay range or pay rate reflects compensation for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position. Actual compensation may differ depending on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time).

Position Overview

SUMMARY (Basic Purpose of the Job)

Operates a variety of Central Utility Plant (CUP) equipment to include boilers, water chillers, pumps, air compressors, and emergency generators for the provision of utilities necessary for hospital operations. Assumes full responsibility for plant operations during evening, night weekend and holiday shifts. Maintains proper water quality for boiler water, condensate, water softeners, cooling towers, and closed loop systems to ensure that water is within proper limits to prevent damage to CUP equipment. Performs equipment maintenance. Repairs and maintains central utility equipment to minimize interruptions of utilities to the hospital. Maintains the CUP and all equipment in first class condition. Promotes a clean and safe work environment which prevents personal injury and equipment damage. Answers off hour maintenance calls, and reports to the appropriate person. Adheres to Capital Health behavior and other related performance standards.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:High school diploma or equivalent. Previous apprentice training as a stationary engineer preferred. Blue Seal License required.

Experience:Two of years related experience.

Other Credentials:Drivers License

Knowledge and Skills:

Special Training:Basic computer skills, experience building automation systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates Central Utility Plant equipment in a manner to minimize risk of the loss of any utilities necessary for the provision of health care in the hospital.
  • Identifies the cause of the failure and takes necessary action to maintain continuity of utilities service to the hospital in the event of an unexpected failure of any utility, item, or equipment in the Central Utility Plant. Initiates emergency notification procedures, contingency plans, policies or procedures during utility failure.
  • Assumes full responsibility for plant operations during evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts, and briefs the relief operators on all significant events.
  • Coordinates with other shop personnel to obtain assistance and information of utilities supported by the Central Utility Plant. Completes assigned duties and all shift responsibilities prior to turning over shift, evidenced through plant logs, EMS printouts, and observation.
  • Maintains and annotates Central Utility Plant logs required by departmental and power plant policies/procedures and logs accurately reflects plant operating conditions at all times.
  • Monitors building automation system and make changes, upon request, within established parameters.
  • Samples, tests, and treats water softener and boiler feed water with appropriate chemicals to preclude excessive scaling of the boiler tubes per standard practice and manufacture's recommendations.
  • Samples, tests, and treats cooling tower water to preclude waterborne disease organisms an environment to grow.
  • Changes and disposes or recycles of empty chemical barrels as needed. Ensures chemical testing and storage area are clean and chemicals properly stored.
  • Maintains necessary logs of water analyses and chemical additives in accordance with power plant directives, policies, or procedures, and keeps power plant supervisor informed of abnormal conditions.
  • Maintains all Central Utility Plant equipment in accordance with issued Preventive Maintenance Orders and manufacturer's recommended procedures. Completes and returns all work orders or PM orders to the Central Utility Plant supervisor upon completion of the task ensuring that the work is accomplished on or prior to the procedure due date.
  • Repairs Central Utility Plant equipment in accordance with directives and guidance from the central utility plant supervisor or manufacture's recommendations. Completes documentation of repair work on Central Utility Plant equipment and submit to the Central Utility Plant supervisor upon completion of the repair.
  • Interprets plant and energy management system readings to determine if equipment is operating properly and anticipates potential problems with equipment and systems, evidenced by plant logs and Energy Management System.
  • Maintains Central Utility Plant spaces in a clean, organized, and hazard free condition at all times by ensuring floors are swept and kept free of water, oil, or other fluids, and performs other floor and plant maintenance duties as assigned by plant supervisor. Cleans, paints, and preserves assigned areas and equipment as directed by the Central Utility Plant supervisor, ensuring the plant is kept in a clean and hazard-free condition.
  • Keeps personal work spaces and equipment in a safe and orderly condition to ensure personal safety, prevent injury, and checks safety equipment to insure availability and good condition as assigned by the plant supervisor.
  • Assumes property accountability of Central Utility Plant tools and equipment during shift operations to preclude loss of hospital assets. Ensures Central Utility Plant security directives, policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
  • Wears appropriate safety equipment and comply with departmental and OSHA safety standards at all times. Maintains a clean, neat, hygienic, well-groomed and professional personal appearance in accordance with departmental and hospital policies at all times.
  • Follows hospital infection control and other universal precautions at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
