Summary
The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) provides direct care to the patients that follows the care plan and assists each patient to achieve and maintain the highest level of health and physical condition.
General Hours of Work
8 or 12 hour shift rotation (weekends, holidays and call rotation)
Education and/or Experience
Completion of 75 hours CNA course required. Prefer high school diploma or GED. Prior related work experience preferred. Attends 12 hours of in-service training yearly. Bi-lingual experience preferred but not required.
Certificate, Licenses, Registrations
Certified as a Nursing Assistant in the State of Iowa required. Must obtain CPR certification within 3 months of hire date.
Essential Functions
- Provides bedside care for the patient(s), take vital signs and passes fresh water, helps pass food trays and assists with feeding when necessary, collects urine specimens ordered for specific patients, maintains accurate intake and output of fluids as ordered on patients, conducts hourly rounding and answers call lights. Removes peripheral IVs and foley catheters, perform flu and strep waive testing and bladder scans, and use glucometer to test blood sugars. Logs into Vocera adding room assignments.
- Assists nurse with admissions by weighing patient, taking vitals and providing room orientation to both patient and family. Communicates activities and vital information to nurse.
- Applies aseptic technique in patient care, follows principles and policies detailed in the infection control manual. Displays proper care, utilization, and charging of supplies and equipment used.
- Gives prompt and efficient assistance to co-workers when indicated, offering cooperation and flexibility. Works with all departments as applicable so that coordinated patient care can be implemented. Answers phone calls, transfers to proper extensions, pages doctors and other personnel. Receives bedside reports from the previous shift, receives patient assignments from Resource Nurse. Provides bedside report to oncoming staff.
- Records and documents clinical data such as vital signs, hygiene, and activity.
- Responsible for the collection of soiled linens in the Med Surg/OB/ED areas and delivers to the soiled linen sorting area.
- Assists with distribution of clean linen to Med Surg/OB areas.
- Maintains a clean/neat environment in working area. These areas may include, but not be limited to, patient rooms, terminals, nurse's stations, lounges, hallways, bathrooms, kitchen areas, elevators, and lobby areas. Participates in all cleaning activities as assigned including, dusting, washing, drying, mopping, disinfecting, vacuuming, moving furniture, and emptying trash.
- Keeps assigned area fully stocked with supplies.
- Completes all housekeeping and laundry functions in accordance with established Infection Control Protocols.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
