Job Description
Pay rate ranges from $17.00 to $17.00 based on experience. Main Function: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is an integral member of the patient care team in the Pre-Op and PACU areas. This position collaborates with Registered Nurses and other healthcare team members to provide safe, high-quality patient care before and after surgical procedures. Duties, Responsibilities, and Competencies: Prepares units, patient rooms, and beds for admission or return of surgical patients in accordance with department policies. Maintains a clean, organized, and safe patient environment by removing unused supplies and equipment and ensuring furnishings are properly arranged. Performs delegated procedures, including obtaining and recording vital signs, measuring intake and output, recording weights, collecting specimens, and completing additional procedures as directed. Observes and reports any changes in patient condition or behavior to nursing personnel promptly. Documents all patient care activities accurately on appropriate charting forms. Responds to patient and family requests within five (5) minutes whenever possible. Explains care activities to patients and families, reports concerns to the RN, and refers clinical questions to appropriate nursing staff. Assists with preoperative and postoperative care, including patient positioning, lifting, turning, and ambulating using proper body mechanics and special equipment as needed. Demonstrates the hospital's mission, values, and customer service standards in all interactions. Applies principles of continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction. Maintains confidentiality of all patient, personnel, and organizational information in accordance with policy. Fosters a cooperative, respectful, and professional work environment. Uses appropriate communication and follows the chain of command when addressing issues or concerns. Incorporates age-appropriate and developmental considerations into all patient interactions. Education, Licensure, and Certification Requirements: Preferred: Current CPR/BLS certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire). Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a hospital or Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) setting (preferred but not required). Current TB Test within the past year. Physical and Mental Requirements: Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, and general information. Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff. Computer Skills: Proficiency in email communication, facility information systems, and EMR documentation. Reasoning Ability: Able to define problems, collect data, and draw logical conclusions. Work Schedule: Flexibility to work variable hours based on the daily surgery schedule. Physical Demands: Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must assist patients in ambulation or repositioning and transport medical equipment. Requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and frequent patient interaction. Must have sufficient vision and manual dexterity to perform patient care safely. Working Conditions (Environmental): Exposure to environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, sharps, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases. May also work near moving mechanical parts and radiation sources. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment must be used. Machines and Equipment Used Pre-Op and PACU equipment including, but not limited to: Patient stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, blanket and fluid warmers, and other clinical equipment. Standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, telephones, and fax machines. Credentials Required: TB Test (within one year) Current BLS certification Minimum one (1) year experience (preferred)
