ACCESS MATTING FOREMAN (CIVIL CONSTRUCTION)
Company Overview
Civil/utility contractor with over 15 years of experience and specializing in land preparation for vertical development. Operations throughout Florida providing services for matting, access road construction, vegetation clearing, and post-construction restoration for powerline, utility, oil & gas, and infrastructure clients across the state.
Job Summary
This position will lead the planning, installation, and safe removal of access matting systems for civil construction sites—coordinating crews and managing logistics to ensure safe, efficient site access over challenging terrain. Work will include loading/unloading and moving mats. Ideal candidate will be a seasoned Wheel Loader/Skid Steer Operator with experience with various access mating (Crane/Wood, Timber Matts, DuraBase, MegaDeck, etc.). This role is “boots-on-the-ground” with active hands-on responsibilities. Work is primarily throughout the State of Florida but travel/work in other states may be required. Work schedule is client/work driven where weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy and install access mats (wood, composite, rig, crane mats) to establish temporary roads, work platforms, and staging areas on soft, wet, or sensitive ground
- Supervise installation crews deploying access mats
- Read site plans and collaborate with project engineers to determine precise mat placement, load requirements, and routing logistics.
- Train crew members in proper handling, connection systems, safe lifting techniques, and site-specific safety protocols.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks, enforce OSHA compliance, and oversee safe mat placement to prevent shifting under heavy equipment.
- Monitor and document crew productivity, mat usage, damage, and daily progress; maintain accurate job records.
- Inspect installed matting for integrity, load-bearing capacity, connection stability, and finish.
- Coordinate with general contractors, equipment operators, and site managers for seamless access operations.
- Oversee maintenance or repair of mats and associated rigging equipment; coordinate with suppliers or manufacturers as needed.
- Enforce environmental protections—ensuring minimal ground disturbance, erosion control, and compliance with restoration requirements
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; further technical or trade schooling a plus.
- 3+ years of supervisory experience in access matting, civil construction site logistics, or heavy equipment staging.
- Strong knowledge of mat types (timber, composite, rig/crane mats), connection systems, and load-bearing calculations
- Knowledge of Dura-Base or MegaDeck mats strongly preferred.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, site coordinates, and terrain plans.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred; strong safety mindset.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Comfortable working in outdoor conditions, including wetlands, remote terrain, and variable weather.
- Valid driver's license; ability to travel between Florida project sites.
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical/dental/vision
- 401K
- Paid time off and holidays
- Professional development support
- Vehicle allowance
