Job Description

When you join The Home for Little Wanderers, you join a team of professionals dedicated to creating better, brighter futures for kids.

The Home for Little Wanderers' Harrington House is looking for Per Diem Residential Counselors Weekends to care for children in their Dorchester location. In the group home, children or adolescents, ranging in age from 8-15 are in transition back to their families or going on to independent living, but need support in order to make a successful transition back to their communities.

The program provides residential treatment by offering a safe, structured home-like, living environment. The children participate fully in the community through school attendance and extracurricular activities. Additionally, the programs offer clinical services, health services, psychiatric services, educational assistance, milieu therapy, and case management services.

What to Expect in the Role

  • Passing the CORI/background check and having a valid ID
  • Being physically active for an 8-10 hour shift
  • Participating in verbal de-escalation and physical intervention with youth
  • Multi-tasking in a changing and fast-paced treatment environment
  • Receiving and implement feedback in the moment and through a structured supervision process
  • Ability to work evenings, holidays, weekend shifts as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year child care experience in a residential setting with similar population of children preferred
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer, with the ability to learn new software applications

  • The programs offer clinical services, health services, psychiatric services, educational assistance, milieu therapy, and case management services.
  • Under the direction of the Residential Supervisor, the Residential Counselor will provide safe, supportive environment for children.
  • Communicate with other counselors from previous shifts to ensure the continued flow of information and coordinate activity log of daily living.

Physical Requirements

Continuous walking, standing, climbing, lifting of objects for 6 - 7 hour shifts. Ability to effectively restrain using proper TCI techniques when needed.
