Job Description
As a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Atlas Actuation Technology team you will contribute every day to developing and improving our actuator products with your individual work and the mentorship and leadership your experience enables. With a role focus of Continuous Improvement Lead, you will be directly responsible for understanding the hardware defects affecting our built actuators, conducting failure analysis and setting priority for root cause analysis and fix development activities. You will be the first responder to most actuator failures and coordinate downstream activities. You will play a major role in planning and executing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) that will merge fixes into the BOM so future robots can avoid repeat failures and more generally help manage the higher level actuator product and technology roadmap. You will not manage a team directly, but be responsible for efficiently maturing the Atlas product as it progresses to and into production!
The humanoid robotics industry is brand new and the ability to efficiently and effectively understand and correct defects will be essential in achieving the aggressive time to market we intend to deliver. This role is a crucial enabler of this efficiency by consolidating deep understanding of what's wrong so everyone working on existing and new designs can capture the right improvements at the right time.
How You Will Make an Impact / Day-to-Day Activities
Collaborate with production and test teams to understand the details and context around failures.
Review and synthesize data on failures and issues in Jira, generating a deep understanding of the maturity of all aspects of our actuator products.
Conduct failure analysis and root cause/corrective action work on specific defects and failure modes.
Propose and execute design changes/ECOs to correct defects and prevent future failures.
Be a primary contributor to the actuation product and technology roadmap, championing what improvements should be made when and what technologies need investigation to provide value on future products.
We Are Looking For / You Bring:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of 7 years of experience in a design, systems or sustaining engineering role.
A deep passion for mentoring and fostering a culture of excellence and best practices.
Extensive experience with Root Cause Analysis and general problem solving methodologies.
Extensive experience launching and improving products, ideally utilizing ECO control to do so.
Exceptional organization and written/verbal communication skills.
A proven track record of autonomously managing large, complex projects, for which prioritization and delegation decisions were left to you.
Experience working in a collaborative setting, particularly in dynamic and agile environments.
Comfort with project management and agile task management systems.
