Job Description

Monmouth University is seeking applications for open Custodian positions in the Facilities Management department located at our Main Campus. Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining the University’s buildings and grounds. This is an in-person, on-campus, non-remote position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a custodian, you would be expected to:

  • clean buildings by manually sweeping and mopping surfaces; manually and mechanically scrubbing, stripping, waxing, vacuuming, extracting, shampooing, dusting, polishing, and buffing surfaces; foaming showers and restrooms; properly selecting and mixing cleaning chemicals; chemically sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces and fixtures, etc.
  • use auto scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, power washers, carpet extractors, and hand tools
  • perform cleaning function specific to your assigned facilities
  • empty waste receptacles and transport and sort contents to designated disposal containers and recyclables 
  • maintain equipment and supplies by completing routine upkeep
  • carpet and upholstery cleaning as assigned using deep extraction machinery
  • check and report safety hazards; take corrective action wherever appropriate
  • clean and polish furniture and metal
  • complete and submit work orders for required building repairs
  • complete special projects as assigned with excellent attention to detail
  • Move and deliver equipment, furniture, supplies, etc., by both hand and vehicle
  • Provide services for special events, including delivery, set-up, and break down furniture and other materials for University special events – as needed
  • Remove debris and snow from assigned building entrances and exits using hand tools
  • Replace incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and LED lamps
  • Replenish rest room and shower room commodities
  • Wash windows using hand tools and ladders
  • Interact with students, parents, and other members of the University community in a positive, customer service-oriented style
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education, training, or related work experience that provides the knowledge and skills to accomplish the typical job duties listed. 
  • Demonstration of good communication skills; read and write in English and understand oral and written instructions, including MSDS directions, chemical product labels, equipment manuals, work orders, and be able to carry out work orders as required.
  • Capable of learning how to operate equipment and learn various cleaning methods.
  • Ability to use all required safety and personal protective equipment (including respiratory protection).
  • Ability to work overtime as required and to respond to emergency calls after working hours.
  • Must have excellent attendance and work record; perform all work in strict accordance with accepted trade practices, code requirements, and all safety and good housekeeping requirements.
  • Must be highly reliable and capable of working independently and without full-time supervision.
  • Demonstration of customer service orientation with emphasis on positive attitude.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift or carry up to 60 pounds, in a range of motion from floor to overhead, and move heavy objects regularly;
  • Ability to push or pull using force up to 20 pounds constantly;
  • Ability to use arms and hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently;
  • Ability to stand or walk 2 to 6 hours at one time per day, for a total of 6 to 8 hours per day;
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, climb, and reach or lift overhead occasionally;
  • Ability to climb stairs or ladders, work at varying heights, and work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions;
  • Ability to work in multi-story buildings without elevators; transport and operate powered machines regularly.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of six months of related experience.
  • A high school graduate or equivalent. 
  • A valid driver’s license in your state of residence and have had no serious violations (Type A) within the past five (5) years and no more than three (3) moving violations (Type B) in the past three (3) years. University Policy found here: Monmouth University Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Ability to drive vehicles equipped with a manual transmission.
